Team: 2022-23 Philadelphia Flyers
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 21, 2022
Published: Oct. 7, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
If Chuck Fletcher wasn’t Chuck Fletcher, this team could have been assembled.

Going back to the 2021 offseason, what if these were the decisions the Philadelphia Flyers made? Would this team be a contender? What would their floor/ceiling be?

1.
PHI
  1. 2023 2nd round pick (PHI)
Additional Details:
2021 13th overall pick
Robert Hagg
BUF
  1. Ristolainen, Rasmus
Additional Details:
Trading picks to unload Shayne Gostisbehere was painful as it was, although helped big time with cap space. Do not double down by paying the 13th overall pick and a future 2nd for a polarizing defenseman arguably worse than Gostisbehere at a higher cap hit- and then re-signing him.
2.
PHI
  1. 2024 5th round pick (PHI)
Additional Details:
Claude Giroux
Connor Bunnaman
German Rubtsov
FLA
  1. Tippett, Owen
  2. 2023 3rd round pick (FLA)
  3. 2024 1st round pick (FLA)
Additional Details:
Do not trade Giroux at the deadline. Meet with him and discuss the aggressive retool plan, including Gaudreau and DeBrincat. Convince him to sign a 1-year extension to trust management one last time, and if things go south again in the upcoming season he can walk at the deadline or in the summer.
3.
PHI
    Alex DeBrincat
    CHI
    1. Lindblom, Oskar
    2. Brink, Bobby
    3. 2023 3rd round pick (NYR)
    Additional Details:
    2022 5th overall pick

Make a statement by acquiring young star Alex DeBrincat from the Blackhawks. He will be the first key piece to the turnaround with Johnny Hockey on the horizon.
    4.
    PHI
    CAR
    1. Deangelo, Anthony
    Additional Details:
Make the DeAngelo trade, but sign him to a slight discount. Because of his track record and rocky past in the league, Tony does not have a lot of leverage and is from the Philly area himself. He has stated being a Flyer is his dream and he wishes to retire here. Explain the plan to bring in talent and negotiate a hometown discount.
    5.
    PHI
    ARI
    1. van Riemsdyk, James
    2. 2023 1st round pick (PHI)
    Additional Details:
Unload the final year of JVR with the pick that teams had been asking for. With no leverage and a goal in mind, you have to pay the asking price if you want to sell tickets and contend now rather than later.
    6.
    PHI
    1. Gaudreau, Johnny ($500,000 retained)
    Additional Details:
Johnny Gaudreau wanted to be a Flyer. Philadelphia had won the sweepstakes that apparently they weren’t even participating in. With the plan followed through on and cap space to work with, bring Johnny Hockey home where he belongs. It is known he would’ve taken less to come here, so negotiate a slight hometown discount similar to DeAngelo.

Only issue is Couts. Is he at a point where he’ll be able to return to form once he gets back. He’s been out a lot and I’m worried just like Backstrom, Hagelin and Ellis. It’s unfortunate to see these types of injuries and the lingering effects.

That doesn't get debrincat. Hawks got who they project to be a top pair defenseman with the draft pick from Ottawa. Brink doesn't beat that or come close.

If it's any consolation, the Sabres picked Isak Rosen with the first from the ristolainen trade. Seems like a reach at the moment. To be fair, he was like 5'11" and 150 pounds playing in an adult league last year, probably needs to fill out. At least for the moment, it doesn't look like the Sabres drafted a sure fire all star with the pick. I wouldn't have wanted a goalie in round 1, but cossa and wallstedt went a few picks after. Chaz lucius, othman, balduc, and lysell were on the board too.

You’re getting more. Lindblom + Brink + a 3rd on top of the 5th overall pick. We took Gauthier, but you guys could have taken Jiricek if you wanted him.
