I'm going to do things different on the writing front this season, so here we are again with monthly thoughts on Syracuse players:
- Barre-Boulet still has it - best player on the ice most nights. Like last season, he's seeing ample PK time and has been effective in cutting off plays and forcing turnovers on the PK and even-strength. Don't count him out yet.
- Felix Robert is like BB but a much quicker skater
- Give Ryfors a chance in the NHL. He works hard every shift and has a decent enough talent level.
- Finley is once again being afforded every chance, but he's looking good with what he gets. Even-strength performance is still a little vanilla, but he's looked good in front of the net on the PP and has had a little PK work thus far too.
- Goncalves' skating I talked about previously, but it seems like he always leaves a little more to be desired. That said, he should have another 2-3 assists this season if other players on the team knew how to put their stick down to deflect Goncalves' passes into the net.
- Fortier has just been ok. Probably would expect more from someone in the final year of their ELC and a little NHL experience under them. He's shown some flashes with the puck on his stick though, so maybe just a rough stretch of luck?
- Dureau looked rough to begin, but he's started to settle into a spot on the third line lately. His talent is clearly visible but needs to be more consistent.
- Thompson is not going to be an immediate star for the Lightning or Crunch, but I like what I've seen so far.
- Day is probably trending towards being a career AHLer. He's still got the same skill, but he's being passed over in favor of Carrick and Raddysh on the PP (one of his previous bright spots).
- Alnefelt does not look to have taken a step forward from last year, but its only been two starts.
- Edmonds was a pretty interesting draft pick, but he's yet to clearly define what role he'll have on the Crunch this season. Could be a good idea to let him play big minutes in Orlando than play the Crunch's fourth line this season.
- Usau has demonstrated a strong two-way game thus far. Kind of reminds me of the way Somppi played. No points yet, but I think he'll get going as the season goes on.
