I liked needling Flames fans saying that Weegar was coming to Ottawa, but it was never going to actually work. First off he couldn't get 8 years in Ottawa, secondly Ottawa doesn't have room to add a 6.25mil Dman. Even if you dump Zaitsev and let Zub walk I Don't think it works. I kind of question if it's even possible to fit Chychrun without losing Zub tbh.

Is your cap really that tight? You can't afford a 5-6 million dollar top pairing defenseman? Let a lone a 4-5 million one?

    Seems hard to believe....

Assuming Ottawa can punt Zaitsev's full deal with no salary back, they will have roughly 27mil in cap space next offseason. Assuming DeBrincat gets 9.5 (could easily be closer to 10) and Pinto gets 3.5 (could go way higher tbh) that leaves them with 14mil to fill 10 roster spots (3 forwards, 4 Dmen, a backup and an extra forward and dman). Assuming you fill all those spots save for one top 4 D with young players making roughly 900K or less (or UFAs making an equivalent amount) that leaves you with roughly 6mil. And this is Assuming Formenton isn't gonna get signed at all (looking very likely rn) and Assuming they let Zub walk (seems very unlikely imo). So they COULD technically have made Weegar work, but it would have required him leaving one year of term and roughly 8mil total on the table (not factoring in higher Ontario taxes).

Ottawa is in a really great position long term as far as cap is concerned. Next off-season is gonna be really tight, and will need them to get creative and play hardball in contract negotiations with young guys. After that though, Ottawa will have their entire core locked up at numbers in the 8-9.5mil range heading into the huge cap boom. In a few years teams will be paying equivalent level players north of 10mil.

    You mean so less?

Or you mean he has no value if he is guilty? Of course, but the Canadian law is "innocent until proven guilty"

So, while in the REAL WORLD he has been in ZERO trade conversations, we have to assume on CF that he has his pre-scandal full value.

The problem will be for 2023-24 but it should be fine after that, particularly if the cap goes up significantly

Forget the scandal. What has he done to be worth a second? I saw someone saying earlier he should be traded for kerfoot and a second then signed for 3 mil (so not much cap savings). He had 18 g and 32 points. That's solid but it's not remarkable

Damn, I would never trade him for Kerfoot and a 2nd. Heck, I would not trade him for a mid 1st round pick.

Did you know for example that he was clocked as the 2nd fastest player in the league behind McDavid? His speed is truly elite and it creates havoc all over the place. He's already very good defensively, a beast on the PK and has a mean streak. Plus, a really nice asset to have for 3 on 3 overtime.

He was 22 y/o last season, his rookie year. He scored 18 goals yes but ZERO were on the PP

Do you know for example that only 75 forwards scored more than 18 ES goals?

And it's not like he played with the best players. Sure Stutzle will be great but he was 19 y/o when Forms played with him. Outside of that, he played with Brown, Paul, Gaudette, Tierney and all the depth forwards

Oh and he also LEAD the league in SH goals (5)... I mean, he's a very good candidate to finish top-5/10 in SH goals in NHL HISTORY. He just has to stay healthy (or not be guilty of a crime of course)

Anyway, for people who have followed him for years, he's so much more than a "solid but not remarkable 18 g and 32 points guy"

Evaluating players through hockeydb.com is just a bad idea.
