Depth swap

Created by: Richard88
Team: 2022-23 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: Oct. 10, 2022
Published: Oct. 10, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Trades
PIT
  1. Kaut, Martin
Additional Details:
Big-bodied complementary RHS winger with 3rd line upside. Seems like a Burke player as he plays a heavy and responsible 200ft game.amd has some offensive skill. The issue in Colorado is just that he doesn't play with the frantic pace Bednar wants consistently enough.
COL
  1. Friedman, Mark
Additional Details:
Friedman is 9th in Pittsburgh's defensive depth chart (and 5th RHD) so is somewhat expendable. Avs lack a competent RHD outside the top 6 so he would fill a need and likely be first call-up at RD.

Both Kaut and Friedman have already passed through waivers so both have roster flexibility.

Seems like a reasonable swap to me unless PIT values him a lot

Disagree Friedman is 3 years older than Kaut who is still on his elc and Friedman has proved he isn’t an NHL dman.

I don't think age should matter that much when dealing with depth guys who have already gone through waivers. If anything Friedman's NHL experience and RHS D make him more valuable.

It's possible that Kaut becomes an NHLer but it likely won't be with the Avs. May as well see what he can bring back via trade. Maybe Friedman isn't the right target though, I just figured a RHD who has passed through waivers already would be a good fit and fill a need.

I 100% disagree. Kaut’s an NHL player, the Avs have just done the polar opposite of what they did with Jost. The Avs have a unique inability to develop players in the minors. If he were honestly in about any other organization he’d be playing in the league. Friedman has had almost double the opportunities, he would have zero chance of ever making the Avs he wouldn’t have made the team this year he has been unable to crack a horrendous Flyer d-corp. you aren’t more valuable being right handed if you can’t play. Hard pass, at least you could convince me a Valamaki swap makes sense, not this.

Appreciate your thoughts. Think you're overating Kaut a bit though. 31 teams could have had him for free yesterday but passed. Maybe he's just not that good, though i do think there's an NHLer there somewhere.

I don’t think Kaut has all that much value, but I know Friedman has zero value in COL. The regular 6 would be ahead of him, Behrens jumps him the minute he signs, MacDermid and MacDonald would be in front of him because of their flexibility to play forward, Little Z I would put ahead of him, and maybe even Aamodt. I’m not opposed to a change of scenery trade but it’s got to be a guy who has a prayer of making and helping the Avs. A 26yr old guy that couldn’t break in on one of the weaker d-corps isn’t that guy. But like always I like you posting stuff that is worth discussing. Good job and keep it up.

Honestly think this is a solid trade tbh. The fact that the pens likely won’t be able to re-sign Blueger and hopefully doesn’t re-sign Archibald, he could possibly slide into the top 12 next year on the fourth line with McGinn and Poehling.
