Edmundson was bad playing on a good Carolina team. He had inflated numbers (like the rest of the team) in 2020-21 when they played all their games in the weak North division against subpar competition. Once they started playing against real competition again, his numbers fell back down to normal (i.e. bad).
In 2020-21 His On-Ice xGF% was 55%, which during a normal season would be great. However, in that postseason when they started playing good teams in the playoffs, it fell to 45%, which is not good. Last season, in the limited number of games he did play, it fell even further to 41%, which is downright bad.
Edmundson has never been a good hockey player. He's decent on the PK, but is absolutely garbage at even strength. For a team looking for a #6/#7 defenseman that can throw a big hit, drop the gloves on occasion, and be a physical deterrent, he's an ok option. However, he's entirely replaceable by a young inexpensive depth defenseman like Logan Stanley in Winnipeg, who is better at hockey, just as good in the physical department, and not a complete boat anchor at even strength. Doesn't hurt that he also costs only 25% as much.
So as I said before, hard pass.
You fail to put these numbers in context. It's not rare that expected goals rate are lower in the playoffs for defensemen, it's actually closer to the norm. They play top teams and top competition on a daily basis compared to the regular season when they often play bottom feeders. Edmundson's xG differential was positive relative to teammates, which shows that despite the team's overall lower xG rate (they played conservative hockey and were out-chanced in TOR and TBL series), he was performing better than the team's standards. Last season in the playoffs, Matt Roy had a 39.93% xG%. Was he bad? No, he was playing against top players on top teams.
Last season, he came back from a major injury on the worst team in the NHL, played 1/4 of the season, and was performing at around the same xG% rate as the team overall. Enough said.
So yeah, he's a good player who accumulated a 5.8 GAR at even strength throughout his career (for comparison, absolutely garbage would be Sean Walker's -0.6 ) and has been an important part of winning teams and deep playoff runs in recent memory which intrinsically increases a player's value.
So as I said before, your assessments of Edmundson are wrong, and I'm not particularly eager to continue to debate on a post that isn't mine, so I faithfully wish you a happy day
