It wouldn't be immediate. Edmundson is out indefinitely with a lower body injury.

Can't see Montreal using one of its 3 retention spots, for 2 years, and sending back a 2nd rd pick.

He's skating and all - he collided with Suzuki in practice and ''stuck'' his back - he'll be back soon. (there isn't much at stake in MTL... so they'll let him get back to 100%

The closest comparable trade for Edmundson I could find was Jeremy Lauzon to Nashville for a mid 2nd round pick near the deadline last year.

So I could see the value here. Durzi is worth more than Lauzon, in my mind, and you added a pick. However I don't think that pick is enough. A Colorado 2nd is pretty much a 3rd rounder in disguise, plus it's pushed a year out. If Montreal could find a 2023 2nd rounder that's closer to the middle of the round in their sell-offs throughout this year, I could see some validity to this.

It does rely on a few things:

1) The Kings don't go out and get a guy like Chychrun in a much larger deal.
2) Edmundson is healthy -- which he isn't currently, even if he is skating.
3) One of Clarke, Spence, or Walker give the Kings reason to move Durzi without affecting their current NHL roster output.

Also @MTLaveragefan, Mikey Anderson has that top-spot on lock. But Edmundson might be a solid 2nd pairing D-man for LA that would allow Toby Bjornfot to grow in a better-suited role for his age.

Edmundson would be so good with Doughty, kinda like he was with Petry in 20-21. He had legitimate top-pair results that year, then the back injuries appeared and he's never fully recovered.

No thanks. I wouldn't take Edmundson for free off waivers.

The reality here is that JE will fetch a 1st rd pick or prospect at the TDL and there will be NO salary retention.

If you want to retain 50% on him and trade him for a mid-round pick, maybe the Kings would go for it. Otherwise, hard pass.

They have very little incentive to trade Edmundson while he's injured and after missing 2/3 of the past season with the same injury. A healthy Edmundson who gets even half the results he had in 20-21 is worth far more than that so any team "that wouldn't claim him on waivers for free" would be biting themselves. Only concern is the recurring back injury, otherwise, he proved his worth by playing a top-pair role on a SCF team.

Edit: It's also mind-boggling that you think Sean Walker is worth a 2nd, but the Habs have to retain half of Edmundson to get minimal value.

Sean Walker doesn't cost $3.5M per season and isn't currently injured. Also, Walker's contract was overwhelmingly considered to be incredibly team-friendly when it was signed, while Edmundson's was considered a bad signing.

Montreal Canadiens signed Joel Edmundson (4 Years / $3,500,000 AAV)

Los Angeles Kings signed Sean Walker (4 Years / $2,650,000 AAV)

Walker also plays the more highly desired RD position.

But Sean Walker missed the whole past season and hasn't played any postseason game ever. On the other hand, Edmundson won a Cup and reached the SCF another time, playing a very prominent role in both.

Look at the Adam Pelech 4x1.6M signing thread and the latest Brendan Gallagher signing thread. That should be enough to realize that those fans' reactions are subject to change rather easily. For the record, Edmundson has accumulated 9.2 GAR in 79 GP since joining the Canadiens two seasons ago including a career-high 11.1 in 2020-21. Walker's highest is 3.4 as a rookie in 2018-19

Edmundson was bad playing on a good Carolina team. He had inflated numbers (like the rest of the team) in 2020-21 when they played all their games in the weak North division against subpar competition. Once they started playing against real competition again, his numbers fell back down to normal (i.e. bad).

In 2020-21 His On-Ice xGF% was 55%, which during a normal season would be great. However, in that postseason when they started playing good teams in the playoffs, it fell to 45%, which is not good. Last season, in the limited number of games he did play, it fell even further to 41%, which is downright bad.

Edmundson has never been a good hockey player. He's decent on the PK, but is absolutely garbage at even strength. For a team looking for a #6/#7 defenseman that can throw a big hit, drop the gloves on occasion, and be a physical deterrent, he's an ok option. However, he's entirely replaceable by a young inexpensive depth defenseman like Logan Stanley in Winnipeg, who is better at hockey, just as good in the physical department, and not a complete boat anchor at even strength. Doesn't hurt that he also costs only 25% as much.

So as I said before, hard pass.

You fail to put these numbers in context. It's not rare that expected goals rate are lower in the playoffs for defensemen, it's actually closer to the norm. They play top teams and top competition on a daily basis compared to the regular season when they often play bottom feeders. Edmundson's xG differential was positive relative to teammates, which shows that despite the team's overall lower xG rate (they played conservative hockey and were out-chanced in TOR and TBL series), he was performing better than the team's standards. Last season in the playoffs, Matt Roy had a 39.93% xG%. Was he bad? No, he was playing against top players on top teams.

Last season, he came back from a major injury on the worst team in the NHL, played 1/4 of the season, and was performing at around the same xG% rate as the team overall. Enough said.

So yeah, he's a good player who accumulated a 5.8 GAR at even strength throughout his career (for comparison, absolutely garbage would be Sean Walker's -0.6 ) and has been an important part of winning teams and deep playoff runs in recent memory which intrinsically increases a player's value.

So as I said before, your assessments of Edmundson are wrong, and I'm not particularly eager to continue to debate on a post that isn't mine, so I faithfully wish you a happy day

Sean Walker has exclusively played for a bad team, so by your own argument, his numbers are expected to look bad.

The Kings aren't in the market for a bottom pair defenseman, so it's moot. Edmundson wouldn't crack the top six on the Kings.
