Possible TDL trades for Severson

Created by: KDev
Team: 2022-23 New Jersey Devils
Initial Creation Date: Oct. 11, 2022
Published: Oct. 11, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I expect a 1st and a top prospect back for Sevo wherever he goes. Team needs don’t matter particularly because I am going to assume that specific team had a serious injury and could need a guy like Severson to help fill the hole.

Probably the only team that has a glaring need for RD. Genuinely think Severson would flourish in Ottowa playing behind that monster offense, though I do understand why they wouldn’t want to move Grieg.

If Devils are out of playoff race, and acquiring team extends Severson, I imagine the trade will look a lot like the Hampus Lindholm deal last year.

No one is overpaying for Severson, max teams will do is for a 2nd round pick, Leafs easily decline

My guess is it would be closer to a first + second like the Lindholm deal last year. Caps are a very good fit though

Ben Chiarot got a 1st+ just last season. Severson is a RHD and much better than Chiarot

I'd probably be fine with that price if Severson was coming with a guaranteed extension. The problem is that I just don't see a way for Ottawa to add a top 4 Dman this year and be able to keep him and Zub. The cap space just doesn't work out for next season. They'd be golden if the cap was jumping to that 87mil zone right away, but it's only projected to go up 1mil next year, which means the money isn't there after the DeBrincat, Pinto, Zub and Brannstrom extensions are signed.

Heck no, if he wasnt on the table for Chychrun theres no way he'd be on the table for a Severson rental.

I must say it’s pretty impressive you know this.

How about we go through the top RD UFAs going into the year..
We got Klingberg, sure you could argue he’s better than Severson, but he is also going to have a higher cap hit to fit. 50% retained leaves it at 3.5mil, just over 2mil is a lot easier to fit in a team looking to load up but sure for arguments sake let’s say he’s better. Also has a 10 NTC

Matt Dumba, again it’s arguable he’s better than Severson but again let’s say he’s better. The issue with him is he is on Minnesota.. a team that should most likely make the playoffs, meaning he most likely isn’t even on the market. 10 team NTC as well

Erik Johnson - COL, 19 NTC
Shattenkirk - 12 NTC, also completely washed.
Radko Gudas, FLA, not trading him.
Connor Clifton- BOS ain’t trading him unless they are out, still not better than Severson
Scott Mayfield- isles could probably consider moving him but again, not better than Severson.

Point being. Whether you think Severson is good or not, Teams will be lining up for his services because there are literally like no other viable, cheap rentals on the market.

Holl is cheaper and better defensively. Leafs have enough puck movers. Enough Dmen in fact. If we were suffering from massive amounts of injuries I could see them being interested. But not this trade.

Yeah for sure they definitely won’t be if they are anywhere close to the playoffs. But IMO I don’t see it just yet. I do think they are one of the most improved teams but playoffs is definitely a stretch

why? Hamilton is healthy, you have 4 legit RD guys and a solid D overall, offensively your legit though I think you could still use an Elite Power Forward to round out the group.
Net is the only real ??? and both goalies have the skill to rebound this year, and if not they have the cap space and prospect depth to trade for one!
would not be shocked to see NJD at the 7/8 spot by TDL.

A decade of mediocrity and similar hopeful off-season have conditioned me to keep my expectations low. Once the losing culture goes away, then I can be confident in this team performing up to expectations.

Sorry I'm a Sharks fan who is dealing with Mediocrity and bleak outlooks for the first time in 24+ years (since 2 years after Marleau was drafted in 97 essentially)
but when i look at building teams you need 7/8 top 6 forwards with at least 2 that are Elite level, plus a few gritty defensive forwards to play grind it out hockey and on the PK. you need 2 offensive D and a solid top 4 with 1 or 2 other D who could be top 4 on most teams and solid to elite goaltender. sprinkle in a tough guy or two and you have a cup contender.
NJD are missing an Elite top line wing and an Elite Goalie, but both might already be on the team! by the TDL we will know what is needed and you guys have the prospects and pieces plus cap to get whatever is needed honestly. have faith your GM has done a good job building up a team that can and will contend for years to come.

Who are they going to over take? Canes, Rangers look like locks. Pens look like they can squeeze back in for at least one more year. So battling for a wild card vs Caps, Bruins, Isles, SENs - going to be tough.

Bruins are thin a few injuries and they could be out, Washington is in the same boat. so is the penguins who are depending on a lot of 30+ players. locks are TOR NYR CAR FLO TBL, then there will be a battle with BOS WAS DET OTT PIT and would not be surprised to see NYI in the mix

Yah, a guy that the Leafs destroyed when he was on the ice. He can't defend, Leafs exposed him in every game they played against him

You know what your argument is called? It is called anecdotal. Anecdotal is extremely unreliable as there is clear bias in your argument. He isn't bad at defense. He is pretty solid two way d man.

Ok, well, trade him to a different team then, Leafs literally destroyed him every game they played against him. There is a sour taste in Leafs fans mouth when someone suggests that the Leafs should trade for him. I don't see him worth more than a 2nd and most Leafs fans will agree with me

I'm sure they will. Also they same fans who think Justin Holl is worth a second.

Wait until the trade deadline when every available defensemen is gone and a contending/playoff team needs a $2M RHD that can play bottom 4 minutes

Also for Severson, lets say the Leafs trade for Severson, where is he going to play? He's not replacing Brodie and Liljegren and on the right side, we have Giordano and Sandin where those two are important to our defense. Gio can also play on the right

Not sure how you can see that when they probably would not do Greig for Chychrun straight up.

The same was said about Pinto, you're about to discover why. Then you will eventually see why Greig was also a prized prospect for Ottawa. Just be patient
