Team: 2022-23 Winnipeg Jets
Initial Creation Date: Oct. 11, 2022
Published: Oct. 11, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Thoughts:
1. The Jets badly need another middle-six, offensive winger.
2. The Leafs need a waiver-exempt d-man right now, per Friedman
3. Jets fans will surely hate me for suggesting a Heinola trade, but hear me out. The Jets clearly don't think super highly of him at this point and I feel like it's just not going to work out here for him. What is going to change?
4. I'm a big fan of Wheeler playing center, but I think that the team really wants Barron to play Center if possible -- I think they're grooming him for that 3rd line Center position. Him between Wheeler and Gagner would certainly be that.
5. Toninato and Capobianco would both clear waivers because they are both not good lol.

I thinks a trade both sides aren't overly happy about losing each player (although it does solve the Leafs problems) it would suck to see kerfoots production taken out of the line up but getting heinola at a low cap hit eases the loss.

I feel like because I both like it and dislike it would stand to be a fair trade.

I doubt the Jets make this trade.
They’ve been pretty transparent in saying that Ville is close to the NHL, just not yet. Because they want him being a top 4, PP guy. If they just wanted a third pairing, 13-14 min a night guy, they’d have kept him in the lineup.
Jets org will likely trade a veteran DMan to make room for Ville this year. That’s my prediction.

Winnipeg declines, they definitely think highly of Heinola. Chevy raves about this guy, and Bowness said he’s already NHL level, just he doesn’t have a spot on the PP as Pionk, Morrissey and Schmidt are ahead of him in that regard so they opted for Samberg/Stanley who give PK help. That’s the only reason he didn’t make it.

Heinola dominated the AHL last year and will do the same again this year until an injury/trade gives him an opportunity to come up.

But you may be able to get a different waivers exempt dman for Kerfoot from another team. Bowness doesn’t run a scoring line in the bottom 6 anyways so Kerfoot would have to play a shutdown role if they traded for him.

Kerfoot to Jets makes sense. Getting rid of Kerfoot 3.5m cap makes sense for the Leafs, though I wish the Leafs could keep him this year.
Kerfoot M NTC does come into play and I do believe that he would have been traded by now if a deal was possible.
But the Jets wouldn't have to give up nearly so much to the cap strapped. Leafs just might be happy with a 4th being returned. In a cap strapped league...trade value and on ice value are two different things.

idk how good Heinola is but I honestly think the leafs view kerfy as a vital piece of the team. i honestly see the leafs holding onto him with all their cap wizardy. But I think this is one of the first times ive seen a kerfy trade where i dont think immediatly that its too much or too little. Good job man
