Devils aren't taking that. There's a team that will offer the first without throwing in a cap dump.

It happens all the time. Teams gms will talk to the players' agent to see where they're at. Then when the trade goes through they sign an extension. Thats what happened with Tkachuk this summer.

I wouldn't really call pearson a cap dump. He would have been top 10 on the devils in scoring. And dermott only makes 1.75 for year. It was more about giving a serviceable dman back.

Johnsson just got waived, nobody claimed him, and he was as productive as Pearson last season. He's a cap dump. Dermott is whatever. Devils would take him if it's needed to make the cap work, but he doesn't add any value, Bahl/Okhotyuk/Walsh should be getting looks before him.

I'm not sure why it has to pre-signed either. The gms are allowed to talk to the agents to make sure a deal will get done once traded

Yes... the first "official" one.

You're really splitting hairs here... Trades like Lindholm, Stone, Fiala, the teams clearly had a contract getting worked up when the trades happened.

The trades are completed with the agreement that there is an extension in place. It’s fairly common…or at least common enough where it ought to be fair to include in ACGMs. It just doesn’t get announced as “sign-and-trade” or “trade-and-sign” like some other sports.

First thought: these two trades seem completely at odds with each other. So the Canucks are selling pending UFA Bo Horvat to get a prospect & a pick, but giving up a pick & roster players to get a rental in Damon Severson? I understand that you're giving the caveat that extensions are in place, but this feels like wheel-spinning in between "going all in" and "retooling".

As far as value: I don't the Capitals say yes to the Horvat trade. First off, I don't see a path to them having enough cap space to get Horvat on the books for this season; secondly, I would think that the Caps are projecting McMichael to basically turn into a version of Horvat - a 50ish point middle-6 C, except on his ELC/bridge cap hits instead of the $6M+ I'd assume that Horvat would get in an extension.

Devils easily pass on the Severson trade you're offering here. You're giving them a 2023 1st, sure, but actually having them take back more cap (Pearson+Dermott=$4.7M, Severson=$4.16M) and two roster players they don't really need. Pearson is probably a third liner on their team at best, and would probably be blocking one of their younger forwards in the pipeline right now; Dermott is not needed because one of the main reasons that the Devils are entertaining the idea of trading Severson is the sheer amount of strong D prospects they have coming through the system. If they trade Severson, I assume they give the rest of the year's run to a guy like Reilly Walsh before handing the reins over to Simon Nemec; Dermott is just a kinda pricey 7th D based on their current depth chart.

Pearson had similar point production and a similar contract to Johnsson, who the Devils just waived. Pearson has multiple years left. He is of no interest.

No they aren't, they are traded at pending UFA value, the acquiring team doesn't pay extra for a player they haven't signed. Refer to Mark Stone for example.

Pearson is a much better all around player than Johnsson with a longer track record. He has consistently played top 6 minutes and is very reliable defensively plus he comes with the always valued (whether it should have value is debatable) Stanley Cup pedigree.

Pearson doesn't have a ton of value but he does carry a bit of value.

You think Lindholm for a young dman + 1st + 2 2nds was rental value?

Havlat signed a day before being traded. It was just one example, there have been others that have been signed, then traded.

Maybe just not a (a) agree to trade, (b) sign, then (c) execute trade order.

Kimmo Timonen in 2007? Signed to extension and was returned to Philly in the two Preds/Flyers (that everyone promised weren't connected). Forsberg to NSH at 2007 deadline, then two expiring UFAs for Nashville's pick back.

Tyler Seguin? Signed during 2012-13 season, then traded later before contract started. Jeff Carter in same boat.

Marian Hossa certainly qualifies as "sign-and-trade" when he was dealt by Ottawa for Dany Heatley.

"A longer track record" sounds like a really nice way of saying somebody's old...

Either way, the Devils would treat him as a cap dump, he doesn't add anything to the team other than a high cap hit.

Adds two-way value and leadership to a team that has a very young roster.

Johnsson was a pretty big part of the Devils PK last season and has solid underlining numbers... They also have Palat, Tatar and Haula as pretty main part of the current roster, they aren't as young as you think, just the core is.

You don't need to convince me he's a decent player, Johnsson is also a decent player. There's just no room for them, especially with their cap hits.
