Lets fix this team

Created by: jnorrrr
Team: 2022-23 New Jersey Devils
Initial Creation Date: Oct. 17, 2022
Published: Oct. 17, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
First thing’s first, Ruff needs to go. Whether people agree with it or not, the reaction from the crowd at the home opener is too much to ignore. Friedman said it best this morning: it would be cruel to put Ruff through this. On top of that, he’s seemingly lost the locker room. Bring Brunette in and let him do his work.

Let’s run back to the preseason lines that we were rolling with. Not really sure why Ruff jumbled things up. H2O line had some really good chemistry together.

Severson has to go. He has always struggled defensively on this team and it’s still costing us goals. Nemec looked at least close to NHL ready in training camp so I don’t think it would hurt to give him a shot.

FWIW, if you really feel like you need to trade Severson, you can get a lot better return than an RFA wing that you're just gonna stick in the press box at a $2.75M cap hit.

it was fun chanting fire Lindy when i was there but i feel like for some reason, the devils management will wait to fire him until its way to late to do anything with our season, or maybe just not fire him at all

If I was running the Devils, I would simply find a goalie who can stop a puck once in a while...

WAY too little for Severson. I'd rather extend him.

(and no team should kowtow to their fans' chants)

I agree with your point on extending Severson over trading him. Perpetual rebuild is foolish when you've got the talent that you do. I don't watch a ton of the Devs, but watched a bit the other night and it almost looks like you guys play similar to my beloved Ducks, where your offence is there (finally), but there's zero coordination in the d-zone. Certainly not a way to be successful.

d-zone coverage is big issue. The strategy we use lets dman go into corners, which frees up space in front of net. If we had an all-star goalie, maybe that works. Otherwise, there should be at least one forward down low while in d-zone. John Hynes liked to play the triangle, which required centers to play deeper (good for wingers like Hall, bad for centers like Hughes). Ruff wants his centers to play up higher for transition, but some adjustment needs to be made with wingers helping out down low.

Formenton obviously CANNOT be traded at the moment. Not sure what people don't understand about this

Yet the Sens would never pay Formenton for a pending UFA who "struggles defensively" (like the OP would say)

The only reason is value is currently trashed on sites like this is because of the HC scandal.

But outside of that, Formenton has always been highly seen in the Sens organization, a bit like Greig and Pinto are today.

He lead the NHL in short handed goals in his 22 y/o rookie season... He was just scratching the surface

But Severson doesn't struggle defensively.

And speedy PK specialists are cheap in this league.
Top-4 RHD are expensive.

Not my words, it's coming from that other Devils fan

The problem you might have is thinking that Formenton is just a "speedy PK specialist"

I mean, sure he looked very good in that role but he has shown a lot more than that. He even produced nicely when moved to the top-6.

Also, he's not just speedy, he's an elite skater, he clocked the 2nd fastest behind McDavid last season

Add that to the fact that Formenton is 23 y/o with several cost controlled years left while Severson is 28 y/o and UFA at the end of the season...

Did you check the link I provided? It touches many points and shows why Formenton is (or was?) going to be much more than a "speedy PK specialist"

Before that TC scandal and the doubt around him, Sens fans would have never agreed to this proposal, instant reject.
