Way too much. If they were open to giving up that much, they'd probably have Chychrun now. Chychrun is cost controlled for 3 years, which is perfect for Ottawa.
If there is an extension, maybe you could justify giving up basically two first round picks, a 2nd, and Formenton. I doubt Ottawa wants to meet Klingberg's price on a long term extension. I think one reason they were going after Klingberg this summer was that they though they could get him cheap because of the depressed market for players. He clearly won't sign cheap, because he took a 1 year deal to try and get his big contract next season. Part of the appeal of Chychrun for Ottawa is that he is cost controlled on a mid-term deal. I don't think they want to go 5-8 years on a big money defenseman when they will potentially have to pay Sanderson 8 million on a long term deal 2 years from now, or 4-5 million on a shorter term bridge.
Klingberg's value at the deadline, if he has a good season, is a 1st round pick and one or two minor assets. That's what these players usually go for as rentals. With that said, if the price on Chychrun is 2 firsts, Ottawa might as well just go after him instead of paying 1 first for a rental.
I just don't think it makes sense for Ottawa with where they are at.
Quoting: PLDGEY
OTT declines.
An offensive D isnt what OTT needs. We don't need a rental.
Ottawa had major issues moving the puck out of their zone last season. They were looking at players who could help with that. They were in on Klingberg as a UFA, until he signed with Anaheim.
