Getting Sandman a D partner

Created by: Claesson4Norris
Team: 2022-23 Ottawa Senators
Initial Creation Date: Oct. 22, 2022
Published: Oct. 22, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Very early in the season, but Jake Sanderson has been Ottawa's best Dman. Time to get him a proper RHD to play with. Here are some options across the league that could make sense.
Trades
1.
OTT
  1. Clifton, Connor
Additional Details:
Underrated DFD.
BOS
2.
OTT
  1. Andersson, Rasmus
  2. Tanev, Christopher
Additional Details:
They won't be moved, but either one would be unreal additions for Ottawa
CGY
3.
OTT
  1. Bear, Ethan
Additional Details:
Was good defensively in EDM. was garbage defensively in Carolina, but actually drove offense quite well. I'm unconvinced that he would be a fit for DJ Smith hockey, but he's one of the most likely guys on this list to actually be traded
CAR
4.
OTT
  1. Murphy, Connor
Additional Details:
Injury history makes acquiring him a pretty risky option, but he's a GREAT DFD even if he's given value back by being an offensive drag in recent years.
CHI
5.
OTT
  1. Johnson, Erik
Additional Details:
I don't love this option, but for one year it could work. Would bring value as a mentor for Sandy.
COL
6.
7.
OTT
  1. Durzi, Sean
  2. Roy, Matt
  3. Walker, Sean
Additional Details:
Roy is probably the best case scenario for Ottawa. He'd be great for Sanderson. Durzi and Walker both way more likely to be moved though.
LAK
8.
OTT
  1. Dumba, Matt
Additional Details:
I wouldn't want to pay Matt Dumba prices for a rental, but he'd be great for Sanderson. I've never thought he was as bad defensively as he was maligned for.
MIN
9.
OTT
MTL
  1. Zaitsev, Nikita
Additional Details:
F the Habs
10.
OTT
  1. Carrier, Alexandre
  2. Fabbro, Dante
Additional Details:
Not happening.
NSH
11.
OTT
  1. Marino, John
  2. Severson, Damon
Additional Details:
Marino was not an expensive acquisition this summer. Ottawa easily could have made that happen, but they were zeroed in on Chychrun at the time.

Severson would be a great add for Ottawa if they thought they could keep him and Zub. Could load up with a offensive pair Chabot-Severson and defensive pair Sanderson-Zub or go with two really strong balanced pairs.
NJD
12.
OTT
  1. Mayfield, Scott
Additional Details:
Love Scott Mayfield. Huge body DFD that Ottawa has been failing to find since Chara left. He's a good Defensive player who would be a huge help in stabilizing this team Defensively.
NYI
13.
OTT
  1. Schneider, Braden
Additional Details:
I'd love Schneider long term, but I'd be surprised if the Rags trade him outside of a big going for it deal which Ottawa isn't really able to offer them.
NYR
14.
OTT
Lol nobody is calling Philly for RHD help
    15.
    OTT
    1. Larsson, Adam
    Additional Details:
I'd take Larsson in a heartbeat. Mediocre last year on a really bad Kraken team, but he's got a great defensive track record. Maybe the guy I'd be least surprised to actually end up in Ottawa, I don't know why, it just feels possible.
    SEA
    16.
    OTT
    1. Holl, Justin
    Additional Details:
Wouldn't do it but Holl could end up as a last resort option for OTT. Don't think he really moves the needle.
    TOR
    17.
    OTT
    1. Jensen, Nick
    Additional Details:
Super underrated. If Washington falls out of the race he'd be a great add.
    WSH
    18.
    OTT
    1. DeMelo, Dylan
    Additional Details:
I miss him so much. Give him back. Would be GREAT for Ottawa. Great DHD, great vibes, great moustache.

EJ is highly unlikely to waive for OTT, and I doubt the Avs would do it to him or have interest in trading him so it might make sense for the Sens but not for the Avs.

Only four games but DeMelo has been pretty trainwrecky so far and some of that has been while on the 3rd pair.

thing is, most NHL players with trade protection have Ottawa on their no-trade list (understandably), and the team's piggy bank can't take players with significant upcoming bonuses. Options are limited for the Senators.

Its a long list. I see three buckets of players here: established guys, young up-and-comers, and rentals. If the priority is to first extend Zub, then many of the established guys may put a squeeze on cap. So I'd focus on a solid veteran rental with lower AAV that could possibly be extended at reasonable rate in off-season (Mayfield or Jensen are probably ideal). My two cents.

    Established players with term
    1. Andersson
    2. Tanev*
    3. Fabbro
    4. Marino
    5. Roy (has 2 x $3.15m remaining)
    6. Carrier (RFA...probably extends similar deal to Ferrero or Siegenthaler AAV)
    7. Larsson*
    8. Murphy
    9. Walker
    10. Bear
    11. DeMelo*

    Up-and-comers
    1. Schneider
    2. Durzi

    Rentals
    1. Severson
    2. Mayfield (UFA...am guessing he gets similar deal to Kulak or Rutta)
    3. Jensen (same)
    4. Johnson*
    5. Dumba*
    6. Clifton
    7. Holl*

    * have NTC/NMC
Bolded are probably best options, in my view.

You know their spending towards the cap, spending more on their players in terms of cash this year than most teams, right?

Damn you should tell the Sens front office this, because they don't seem to know. Certainly had no problem handing put money this summer

They're taking a huge financial risk. The reports said they need to sell out all of their home games to afford spending to the cap. They finally understood the correlation between icing a good hockey team = good attendance, that doesn't mean they can throw money out of the windows yet.

Small difference between paying your young stars, fruits of years of rebuilding and/or fruits of your former franchise player trade, and blindly paying bonuses/salary for a guy like Connor Murphy. They still have to be cautious with what they can afford.

Their financial situation decides what the sens can afford, not the management.

That’s true but some teams especially with star players are doing monster bonuses, players love it because they get huge checks and money now is worth more than money later simply because of inflation, teams that are cash rich like it because they can “buy down” to a certain extent AAV’s by paying more up front. I wonder how it will affect some of the big UFA’s coming on the horizon. Just an observation, but great comment about the Sens paying up for guys particularly this off season with Stutzle, Giroux and DeBrincat.

Feel free to link those reports, but they can afford to spend well past the cap with the revenue-sharing payments they receive. Eugene Melnyk never did it because he didn't want to spend the money, not because it wasn't possible.

That doesn't mean they can't though. All you've said is that Dorion has said they won't right now. There's nothing there that says it is a risk or that it isn't viable. You're deep diving into a nothing quote.

And you're deep in overrating Ottawa's financial situation.

Don't go to the TSN 1200 Twitter as a source of quotes. It's not a quote, they paraphrase things to make it more inflammatory. That's when they aren't completely making up quotes like the time they made up a quote about Thomas Chabot sh*tying himself.
