-Both players have negative value.
-No one is giving Montreal assets for Dvorak without Montreal eating a contract to offset his contract. The cap is too tight. The Coyotes sold high.
-Montreal does this trade because they get out of the contract 1 year earlier. Zaitsev only has 1 year remaining after this season. Dvorak has 2.
-Ottawa makes this trade because Norris is out for the season.
-Dumping Zaitsev subsidizes the salary+cap coming in from Dvorak.
-Maybe Ottawa throws in a 2nd or 3rd round pick, but nothing drastic.

Zaitsev has negative value, Dvorak isn't worth a lot but he is worth something.

Dvo isn't negative value. He's a 3C getting paid 3C money. Try again.

Dvorak SPAR is 0.7 which suggests he has some positive value. Zaitsev has a -3.9 SPAR for 21-22. Therefore, value is not close

Montreal gets out of the contract, 1 year earlier. There is value there, for a cap strapped team.

Montreal was the only team willing to give up a 1st for Dvorak, that was a year ago. Trade values for any player with term have cratered, because GMs are ultra conservative right now. Connor Brown went for a future Washington 2nd (so basically equivalent to a 3rd in this draft). He didn't have term bogging down his trade value.

Whether Ottawa throws in a 2nd, or a 3rd, or a B prospect, whatever. Doesn't make a big difference. It's the base of the trade that is the point. Do both players have negative value? Yes or no. If yes, does Montreal value nearly 5 million in cap in 24-25 enough to downgrade to Zaitsev for this year and next? Given that Zaitsev is a sunk cost, is Ottawa willing to take on the liability of nearly 5 million in cap/salary (if still a budget team) in 24-25 simply to get a 3C now?

Another option for Ottawa to acquire a top 9 forward, if he is still available, might be Kerfoot. His base salary is only 750k, which means Ottawa can acquire him without having to move Zaitsev to clear out cash.

The value of nearly 5 million in cap in 24-25 exceeds the difference in value between Zaitsev and Dvorak.

Montreal does not have much cap flexibility over the next few years. It gets them out of Dvorak a year earlier.

Zaitsev, despite being the worse player, would also be easier to move next season. Once his signing bonus is paid, he will only be owed 2.5M against a 4.5M cap hit, and it will be the final year of his deal. Multiple rebuilding teams would likely take that contract for a 2nd round pick.

If Montreal can get a 2nd or 3rd round pick out of Ottawa for the negative value swap of contracts, pay the bonus Zaitsev is owed on July 1st 2023, and then flip Zaitsev with a 2nd round pick to Arizona, Chicago, Buffalo, etc - they essentially would get out of the Dvorak contract 2 years early at no cost to them asset wise.

At the end of the year, Dadonov, Drouin, Byron , Mohanan and Schueneman will left. Above 20 millions for signing Caufield , Harris and Pezzetta

I think Habs will be alright by keeping Dvorak who can still be useful

Dvorak doesn’t have negative value. Habs traded a first and a second for him a year ago. They were in competition with multiple other teams for his services. Arizona was getting a 1st rounder no matter what, Habs threw in a second and outbid other teams.

Right now the cap is too tight so they’ll wait until the offseason to trade him when the cap likely goes up by 4 mill.

He’s worth minimum a 2nd rounder in the offseason when the cap likely rises by 4 mill giving teams some wiggle room. Habs traded a 1st and 2nd a year ago for him, other teams were interested according to Friedman, Habs outbid the other teams by throwing in the 2nd rounder. He might not still be worth a 1st but he is 100% worth a 2nd, maybe a little more.

All of them will go out except maybe Monahan who play really good right now, he could be a surprise in the form that was thinking of taking him in to be an asset to trade at deadline for pick and now he could be an idea to keep around and resign for less then what he winning right now. Maybe around 3 to 4m ?

Yeah no, mtl decline easily. I have the feeling that only mtl fans want to trade Dvorak away. Management and coaching staff seem to like him alot. At 4.5m it's not mtl worst contract to have, I feel Armia IIS a bad one compared to Dvorak.

Also one of important point is that he help young players growth by eating minutes and letting them take there time in there respective league.
