Why Toronto does it:
They clear 3.5M in cap, they also gain assets, both of which can be parlayed into a second trade for a defenseman.

Why Ottawa does it:
We will assume that Norris is out for the season. Kerfoot enables Ottawa to move Pinto up to the second line. Most importantly, Ottawa is a budget team. They are still looking to add a defenseman. Kerfoot's base salary is only 750k. This leaves salary open for Ottawa to go after a defenseman. His cap hit of 3.5M is inconsequential to Ottawa. If they are not a playoff team, they can flip Kerfoot at the deadline for a mid or late pick and recoup some value.

Ottawa received a WSH 2nd for Brown this off season. Brown had similar production to Kerfoot last season. Both are top 9 forwards. It seems like a reasonable comparable.

How much does Pinto cost Ottawa in terms of draft picks?

Due to the nature of Toronto being a cap team, and Ottawa being a budget team, does this trade help both sides?

Interesting. I am not sure why so many Leaf fans hate the guy. His cap hit is fine for a 50 point player but he is only paid 750 in actually squish this year.

The dynamic is different between Toronto and Ottawa, because Toronto cares about maximizing their roster under the cap. While Ottawa cares about maximizing their roster under the budget. It is what makes them such good trade partners.

Kerfoot at 3.5M might not be great, Kerfoot at 750k for a team that just suffered a major loss to their top 9 depth is good.

Cap is going to be a bottleneck with the Leafs acquiring a defenseman. Opening up 3.5 million could enable the Leafs to make a second trade.

I see him as our swiss army knife..........and that's something all playoff teams need. personally, I don't think we need to or should trade him....

Even with Norris potentially missing time I don't see a big need. Ottawa is a wagon offensively this year, they don't need Kerfoot. Pinto is gonna thrive when he moves up to play with Giroux and DeBrincat, and I'd be totally comfortable with Brassard at 3C til Norris is back.

Ottawa really only needs to add one thing, a top 4 RD. Hamonic hasn't been awful, but he's being propped up by Jake Sanderson, and is just not a real top 4 D anymore. They get someone who can help Sanderson and they're in a really good spot. Then they can talk about adding forward depth
