The type of winger NJD needs

Description

Have seen a lot of winger-to-NJD trades recently that in my view miss the target.

Devils need a big-body-soft-hands type to play in front of net and tip, deflect, screen and clean-up rebounds. We have plenty of guys who can play in transition and on perimeter. But for years have lacked an impactful interior presence.

For the last couple of seasons, we have been dead last in goals off tips/deflections and near dead last in shooting % off rebounds. We have ended up using Hischier in that spot, which is a bit of a waste of his talent. Bastian has seen time there, but lacks the finishing touch.

Other than goaltending, it’s our only other glaring need.

Here are some guys that come to mind. Although some of the names below could fit in a trade, these are really just examples (in no particular order). Please suggest others if you think of them.

Hörnqvist, Patric

FLA

The Pittsburgh version of Hornqvist from mid-2010’s would be a great example. Great scoring touch but also a pest near the net. Not sure he still has it though.

van Riemsdyk, James

PHI

Prime JvR would also be ideal too. Some of the best hands in hockey. But like Hornqvist, not sure he still brings it like he used to.

If his skating ever comes along, I’d hope Nolan Foote would turn into a kind of poor-man’s JvR. That would help a lot going forward.

Kreider, Chris

NYR

One of the best interior players of current day. Seemed like he scored half his 62 goals last year with one leg in the crease. Would be exactly what we would need. (But not likely as an actual target…just using as an example here).

NYI

Sticking with unlikely intra-division examples, Lee has been great in this regard as well.

Tkachuk, Matthew

FLA

Tkachuk is as good as they come near the net and would be perfect in that role. And brings a lot more too. But is also about as unavailable as they come (although it sounded like we tried last Summer).

Probably a bit underrated in this regard, but fits the bill

Comtois, Maxime

ANA

Not sure his availability, but would be a great option in a interior role. Probably one of the guys I’d go after the most if I were GM. And I don’t think we have seen his peak yet.

DET

Probably a cheaper option that we should have considered last summer. Has less of complete game, but certainly good in front of net.

Boeser, Brock

VAN

Not a classic interior big body, plant-him-like-a-tree type, but is great in tight, especially pouncing on rebounds. For me, a much preferred option over Garland if given the choice.

LAK

One of the younger examples out there. Little chance he is moved anytime soon, but he fits the mold.

Another prospect version whose potential matches our need. Probably not a full-time top-sixer, but could be useful as 3rd liner who features on PP.

Higher up on prospect list (and fully unavailable). But his interior game is strong.

About as good a set of hands as we have seen in recent memory in NJD. May not come with physicality but has always been good near net.

I honestly don't think NJD needs something major at all. A truly elite goalie perhaps. Not saying they have bad goaltending.

Sens are very stubborn regarding their prospects. They also seem pretty high on Ostapchuk so he might be in the next wave of untouchables like Greig/Pinto depending on the season he has

I think he probably turns out to be more of a role player, bottom-sixer, but a good one that can probably add to PP in front of crease. But shouldn’t yet be in untouchables. (At least, not until we get our hands on him).

Yeah, I'm not as high on him as I was/am with Pinto/Greig (not close) but he looks like a safe bet to be a NHL player. I think he'll top as a 3rd liner, maybe in the Mathieu Joseph mold

That being said, you never know with Dorion and crew, they're very high on their own stuff.

Devils acquired Haula to play 3C. And have LWers Wood, Tatar and Johnsson expiring after this year…plus have 3 young forwards in press box each night (Boqvist, Holtz and Zetterlund). So it probably makes more sense for us to wait.
