I feel like SJ could get a return like that for Meier & Reimer without taking on so much bad cap.

Less quantity and more quality on the Murphy trade.

Overpay?

Murray is hurt and might not come back until.late in the year.
Muzzin is hurt and might not come back at all.

Robertson for all the fanfare has proved nothing.
TN is a nice piece
1st is late in the round between 25 and 32.

So you rid yourself of two bad contracts that are two years long and you get a a decent piece that you might be able to resign.

Overpay is extreme, what do you think it takes to get a very good player, Denis Maglin and a bag of pucks.

Murray is back in 3 weeks, Muzzin may retire and if he does then why do we need to trade him? And Meier is a rental because he isn't worth 10 million and that's his QO. So nope

Pretty atrocious offer for Murray, No way the Hawks accept that.

Why would San Jose accept that? Muzzin can't stay healthy neither can Murray. Nicholas Robertson is so overrated. He's not his brother Jason. TN is a nice prospect and a late 1st and 3rd round pick. That offer is pretty atrocious as well.

Why would SJ take on 2 multi year big cap hits in a Meier trade?

Chicago can flip each of these guys to other teams at the deadline for more picks/futures.

Because they'd be getting two big prospects and a 1st for a guy who is expiring at the end of the year and the should be Sharks rebuilding. Meier would be one of their biggest trade chips for a rebuild.

but a 12mil cap hit until 24-25? That's a lot.
Retaining on Reimer is no biggie, but probably would need to add a 1st to take on that much dump. Reimer is about worth a 2nd by himself and people think SJ would be looking for a 1st + very good prospect as a starting point
Meier will be a RFA that SJ could easily resign. SJ has trouble scoring, so it's hard to give up Meier even though most agree they should for the long term
People make a big deal out of the 10mil QO but realistically he'll land in the 8mil range assuming his production is the same this year

Just because he has a high QO doesn’t make him a rental lol

Yes I do. His salary this year is 10 million, making his qualifying offer 10 million. So what incentive does he have to take less than that on a long term deal? He can make 10 and then pick where he wants to go. If whoever owns his rights doesn't want to give him a QO, then he's an FA and can sign whatever he wants with anyone. So why would he do anyone a favor? He's handcuffed any team who owns his rights. Now is there a chance he signs long term? Or course, but where? Right now he's in San Jose, where he can force their hand by waiting for the QO and then sign it to give himself a year of making 10 million and then go anywhere he wants. He literally has all the power

No he doesn’t have all the power, he’s an RFA, he doesn’t choose where he goes. Why sign one year for $10 mil with potential to regress or get hurt, when he can just sign an 8 year deal for like $70 mil guaranteed? And it’s not the sharks problem if they trade him. They will trade him with the thought that the team acquiring him will have the potential to have him for 8+ seasons and that will for sure play into the cost to get him.

That's a great deal of risk for the acquiring team. What obligation does he have to accept less than his QO. He can easily play hardball and at a certain point they have to either give him the QO or risk losing him as an FA. And unless you think Meier just isn't that good, then many teams will be happy to give him a huge 7 year deal.

3 replies about how terrible meier's deal is but the leafs will take him for a pile of junk and if we throw in a goalie they despartely need.

The whole league can smell how desparate Dubas is. No discounts and absorbing leaf cap dumps

This is the response you goons have had for the past 3 years. You can always smell how desperate the Leafs are. Always and they can never keep their stars and will have to blow up the core and etc etc etc

You're totally right that Meier could take a 10mil 1 year contract offer and then be FA after a season, but that is less likely than him taking a longer NMC contract and SJ has the space to do both. Taking the longer deal with your existing team is more secure / has less uncertainty and most players do that unless they are disgruntled, which Meier hasn't shown as of yet.
Sure Meier will use his QO as negotiating leverage but that's not going to translate to SJ getting fleeced in Meier trades. It makes as much sense as people thinking SJ would give up their 2023 1st to dump Vlasic. Just not going to happen
