Like this a lot for Montreal. Hillis is currently an ECHL player and Beaudin is a bubble NHL defensemen (for us). He already cleared waivers so have flexibility there.

Montreal tried to trade up and draft Beaudin the 2018 draft and then tried to trade for him again in 2019.

Think we likely send Trudeau back to Junior and Beaudin takes his spot. Could also see us loaning Norlinder to Sweden as he hasn't worked out very well in Laval.

If Montreal wanted Beaudin, they could have claimed him off waivers 3 weeks ago for free.

Whether Beaudin is a former 1st round pick or whether Hillis is an ECHL player is completely irrelevant.

The Chicago Blackhawks win the trade.

If that’s true it make no sense for MTL to have waited. At least Chicago gets a centre back

Come one Kent, trade for a stay at home RHD already!

Then take Wideman out of the line up and give PP time to Harris or even Xhekaj...

I thought MTL would have to sacrifice one of Ylonen or Harvey-Pinard to get him. Surprised that an ECHLer was enough.

You fail to see the advantage of getting rid of Hillis contract. MTL still has 5 spots free until the 50 contract limit, but thay could change quicky by TDL.

Anyway an ECHL player's contract is a waste of a spot.

They really don't. Many teams trade for players who 1. already cleared waivers 2. while sending another contract back.

Agreed, Hillis hasn't done much even at the ECHL level, the value of moving his contract spot was probably greater than the value of getting Beaudin off waivers for free.

Montreal wins, Beaudin has more upside than Hillis though both probably won’t end up being much

By claiming him, Montreal would have had to keep him in the NHL for 30 days + risk losing him for nothing when waived, after those 30 days. On top of this, if CHI claimed him back and no other team did, he could have been sent to the minors by Chicago.

This way, Montreal makes sure he stays in their system, at the AHL level, throughout the entire 22-23 season. Also, getting rid of a contract has value for Montreal.

Norlinder intend to play in North America all year and he's been good so fair, he's the go-to guy for Houle this season so far

How does clearing waivers work in regards to timing. So Beaudin cleared waivers once. How long does that last or if he gets called up to NHL and then needs to be sent down to AHL again does that mean he needs to clear again? Thanks.

Chances are both guys never amount to anything so the idea of someone winning is kind of self fulfilling. Hillis is better than ECHL status but probably nothing more than a AHL'er. Beaudin has some higher upside but I don't think he'll ever realize on it. This is both teams taking a swing but not expecting much.

Placing a player on waivers is an admission by his team that said player no longer has any trade value to that team.

If nobody claims him, that player's trade value is wiped out.

Determining which team wins a trade is really that simple.

Also, I see that the Habs' fanbase is out in full force today, which probably explains why the vote is lopsided.

And why I'm being bombarded with all these comments popcorn

You're being bombarded with all these comments because your logic is plain dumb.

Hillis is an NHL contract in the ECHL, which says a lot. There aren't many of those and they're usually the product of a team handing NHL contract to one of their mid-round picks too soon. It's far from a positive asset, it's a wasted contract spot that would have 100% cleared waivers was he eligible this year. The fact that you're saying an AHL vs ECHL swap is a loss is beyond saving.

I'm very happy for Beaudin. He needs more ice time and wasn't going to get it with the Rockford Ice Hogs. I don't have any inside information, but if you just connect the dots...I'm sure this trade was requested by Beaudin because he was likely being sent to the Indy Fuel...aka...ECHL.

I'm a bit surprised Hillis is coming back, but it doesn't really matter. Neither likely makes an impact, BUT Beaudin has a chance.

MTL fans may not believe this, but this reminds me of Danault. When Danault was sent to MTL he was awful for the Hawks and not even really playing well in the AHL at the time either. I hope Beaudin take FULL advantage.

***Edit*** Evan Barrett on the move too. Looks like the Ice Hogs are doing a bit of house cleaning.
