Description
First off I'm not 100% certain on LTIR and how that affects a teams ability to accrue cap space but I read the Capfriendly FAQs and this is my understanding of how it works

After the Domi trade EDM will run a 21 man roster with a cap hit of $81,236,500 and have an ACSL of $82,499,833, meaning they will be accruing that difference until the deadline. Im going to approximate TDL cap space by breaking the season into 3 parts: before Domi trade, After Domi trade but before TDL, and after TDL

Before Domi Trade (A): For the first 18 days of the season EDM has very little cap space, im going to approximate this as $0 accrued (they actually should be accruing a little but so im underestimating here)

After Domi trade but Before TDL (B): For the next 125 days in the season EDM trades for Domi 50% retained and also moves out Foegele. This puts them at a cap hit of $81,236,500 and have an ACSL of $82,499,833. For an approximation im going to say they accrue cap by being 1.25M under their ACSL for this period (again im underestimating how much they are accruing)

After TDL (C): For the final 42 days EDM will be able to spend the money they accrued from the previous 125 days and use it to acquire Jakob Chychrun. See below for calculation

Post-TDL cap hit calculation:
A = Pre Domi Trade Cap Hit (excluding LTIR) = 82.5M - 0 = 82.5M
B = Post Domi Trade Cap Hit (excluding LTIR) = 82.5M - 1.25M = 81.25M
C = Post TDL Cap Hit (excluding LTIR) = ?

A*18/185+B*125/185+C*42/185=82.5M
C = (82.5M-A*18/185-B*125/185)*185/42 = (82.5M-82.5M*18/185-81.25M*125/185)*185/42 = 86.2M

So they need to make sure they dont exceed an average of 86.2M cap hit for the last 42 days of the season (excluding LTIR). With the Chychrun trade it puts them at $85,836,500 so they should be fine and actually could have some space left over for performance bonuses to limit carryover to next season

Edmonton was using ltir entering the season when teams do that the cap becomes fixed at that for the year so Edmonton will not be gaining any extra wiggle room by deadline. This is why teams generally try to put injuried players on the opening season roster before placing back on ltir. Holland obviously couldn't maneuver around both klef and Smith. Ltir can get a bit confusing that's just my limited knowledge. If I'm mistaken please let me know.

That sounds right to me. For sure Edmonton won't be accruing any cap space during the season.

You did alot of math and it was fun to read but unfortunately it doesn't work for Edmonton. Pretty sure you can't accrue cap space when using LTIR.

I think the point of the ACSL is to be able to accrue cap space while using LTIR

from Capfriendly's LTIR FAQ:
"When a team goes into LTIR, their effective salary cap, or upper limit, is changed. This adjusted upper limit is calculated as a function of the teams cap space and the player’s cap hit. This value is the “accruable cap space limit” (ACSL), and is the first value calculated. Second are the salary and performance bonus relief pools that are later explained below.

The accruable cap space limit is the teams new upper limit excluding their LTIR relief pools. If the team operates below the ACSL, they begin to accrue cap space."

EDIT: I'm seeing all over twitter than you can't accrue cap space while in LTIR but the FAQ page seems to contradict that, unless I'm misinterpreting something

CHI will definitely eat Foegele's contract and move Domi to a contender, but to do both in a single deal it's gonna take more than a conditional 2nd round pick - especially if you're expecting CHI to eat some salary on Domi.

A first-round pick or equivalent prospect would be the starting point. But I don't hate the idea!
