What can the Sharks give Timo Meier to make him look past his qualifying offer

Created by: sensonfire
Team: 2023-24 San Jose Sharks
Initial Creation Date: Oct. 29, 2022
Published: Oct. 29, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
His qualifying offer is 10 million dollars.

Here are your options for answering the question:

1. Nothing

2. 8 year extension

3. Signing Bonuses

4. NMC

5. Something else

To make him look past that, I decided to give Timo what the LA Kings gave Kevin Fiala.

Let me know if I'm on the right track.

it’ll have to be at least what hertl is getting, i’d think 8x8.5 is bare minimum

Timo Meier over the past 3 seasons (141 games) is a 0.78 point per game player. That is worse than Fiala, but on a worse team as well. He is also not a center, so the Hertl comparison is not a good one.

I don't think Meier would care for a full NMC, as he might want out of SJ. So, maybe it starts with a 3-year M-NTC to cover places he absolutely wouldn't want to play in. The answer to the question is a big 8 year extension or maybe something else like a big 8-year extension and trade but I'll just go with the extension.

I think you are on the right track. Combining the last 3-years I think Hertl is ahead in points but in the last 2 Meier's would be. So if at the end of this year Meier is ahead of Hertl over the 3-years, he's going to want to be paid accordingly so probably between 8.25-9 will be the middle ground for a deal (team offers 7.85-8.25, Hertl starts the ask at 9+).

If Meier is behind Hertl/the same, he probably wants 7.875-8.5.

The comparison vs Hertl will only work for him if he passes him as the highest producer on the team. That doesn't mean the Sharks will give in because his PPG will likely still be the same/lower than Fiala's and Hertl is a 1C. Meier's side could argue that he's the future though too and scoring PWF are hard to come by.

That being said he might have had his new career year one year too early.

Better off just trading him for max return. It’s a bad roster, multiple bad contracts, a few good pieces in pipeline. Go full rebuild. They are not going to compete for few years anyway. Great uniforms at least, they killed it there.

Really? Personally not a fan, I thought the old unis were some of the best in the league, home and road honestly

Depends on what kind of year he has this year, he's off to a (uncharacteristically) slow start. The Sharks seem pretty terrible, so honestly, they might not even be the ones making this decision since trading him for futures seems like it might be the best move.

If he picks it up, has a year he's accustomed to having and is still with the team at the season's end, how hard would it be for him to argue for a long-term extension worth $10 million AAV, especially with the cap projected to go up soon? Especially since he has some leverage?

I hate proposing things like this, but the Sharks might be best off trading him

I’m not saying he’s worth that just that he will look that way. Especially given the fact his QO is $10 m. I think we could see him sign for like 8 x $9 m.
