This guy is pretty bad. I couldn't understand it when the Canes grabbed him for a year. Even at the AHL level.
He was picked up by the Canes for Seattle’s expansion draft. He satisfied the criteria of the Canes having the required number of signed goalies, when they had several that were UFA at the time. He cost the Canes nothing to acquire.
Holland did his back-stabbing bud a solid, after Waddell had claimed Anton Forsberg in 2020 on waivers anticipating a waiver claim on Ned. This really effed the Oilers goalie situation at the time because of injuries to both Koskinen and Smith. Remember this, Waddell owes him big time.
As for Wells, he was spoken of in Matt Murray terms (soon after his Cup exploits), all kinds of potential in his mid-teens, but did not put up good numbers, except for 1 season and 1 playoff run in the OHL after he was drafted.
Basically was drafted based on hope and not due to his results. He is a back-up ECHL quality goaltender, but he is also still young for a goalie. His “potential” will always give him an opportunity over less-heralded prospects.
