Perfect Reset

Created by: Canucks33
Team: 2023-24 Vancouver Canucks
Initial Creation Date: Nov. 3, 2022
Published: Nov. 3, 2022

Description
Organizational reset.

Miller is the one that absolutely must go. His age and contract both do not fit and the rumors about locker room dysfunction, while not substantiated, have persisted long enough. Move him for a 7th if you have to. Boeser and Garland are pieces we can afford to move to address organizational weaknesses.

Sissons, Fabbro and Bedard are all from Vancouver and should inject a lot of heart into the organization.

    Horvat at the deadline.

Ideally I would like to re-sign Horvat, but he may not have any interest in coming back. In that case, he has to be moved for the best possible return.
    2.
    VAN
    1. Kuraly, Sean
    2. 2023 2nd round pick (CBJ)
    Additional Details:
Columbus get's a hometown top-6 C/W signed long term to insulate their young players like Sillinger and Johnson. Miller is still a massive upgrade for their roster and could be a legit 1C to rack up points with Gaudreau. Plus, Columbus being a small market usually has trouble landing top end talent except last year, so landing one for this cheap has to be enticing. It gives them a legitimate chance to capitalize on the Gaudreau signing and take the next step as an organization.
    CBJ
    1. Miller, J.T.
    Additional Details:
If we are going the rebuild/reset route, moving Miller would be a big win regardless of the return. This contract was already a massive mistake by management (no way Miller should have been re-signed before Horvat) and the Canucks are no longer in a position of power in a Miller trade. Still, moving on from the contract would be a massive help. The number of interested teams has definitely gone down, but I think he could be moved in a deal that was this cheap.

I think you're going to be disappointed with any return for Boeser. He's so injury prone and he's got flaws as a player. Carolina does make sense as a destination but not while he's battling the ability to get into the lineup. Not a statement on his ability, just his injury woes.

    Yes and no but yes,
Yes I think he is going to return less, I dont think that we will see much money move until we see what the cap looks like over the next few years
No I dont think that he is ALWAYS hurt, its just he had one thing at the beginning of last season, took awkward hit in 2019 and took a slash this year, broke his hand, then his wound dehisced.
Yes he is injured but it should not be something that keeps teams away from him

His injuries are his biggest concern, but he undoubtedly has the ability to score 30+ goals fairly regularly and maybe hitting 40+ once in the right situation. Carolina could be that situation and he'd be a solid bet for a contending team as a piece that could put you over the top. Boeser was also pretty good in the Playoffs. If he misses 50 regular season games but performs in the Playoffs, that would still be worth it for a contender.

I didn't say he's always out, but he's injury prone. You can list his injuries, but that doesn't excuse it. It's awful he's battling with injuries, but it affects his value and it will keep teams away. He's got a great shot, but he's not great defensively, he's nothing special as a skater, and now with a broken hand... it's going to keep teams away.

If Carolina are missing someone that's supposed to be a 30 goal scorer, there is a major doubt about their ability to make the playoffs. Even now, they're not special. They're just waiting for Pacioretty to get healthy. Boeser isn't a good idea if he's missing more than half the regular season and that will affect his value. When he's healthy, he's a solid player and a good pickup. But he's not healthy.

Carolina will easily make the Playoffs with Pacioretty out and they could do the same with Boeser. That's not a concern. The concern is being the best team possible for the Playoffs to win the Cup and having Boeser improves them a lot. Boeser's injury will likely affect his trade value, but it doesn't mean that certain teams (like contenders) should not be interested. If anything, they get to buy low on someone that can make an impact for them when it matters.

Don't see NSH being a taker on Garland. They've got enough in-house options on the wing for the 2nd line next season (Tomasino, Evangelista, Afanasyev, etc), and they'll need to free up some cap space then. Bringing in a $5M 20 goal scorer and an overpaid #6-7 defenseman isn't the right direction for them.

I can't see Ottawa giving up a first this season at the TDL. It would have to be a true contender...,.a pick in mid twenties to thirty two.
You're right about Miller. Trade for anything if you can, and then use that cap for other player(s).

If teams wanted a player that won't play during the regular season, they could just go and get Josh Norris. Boeser doesn't make sense. His injury concerns will put teams off. It's why players that have injury concerns cost less. A team like Carolina may be interested in him, but while he's dealing with a broken hand on top of his lingering other problems? A lot of teams will be skeptical about paying through the nose for him. Especially a team like Carolina that wants to be clever with its asset management.

Good luck acquiring Norris. The player still has to be available in a trade.

He doesnt have a broken hand, To my understanding it was a fragmentation or soft tissue damage just from what it sounds like. He has wound dehiscence now, all it takes is time and he will be fine, but that was due to him rushing himself back. If he waited a little bit longer he wouldnt of had this problem, his stitches wouldnt have fallen out but now he needs to wait until the wound heals over and that will take longer because he needs the scar tissue to fill in a gap.

being injury prone is tucker poolman, guy has been with the canucks for 92 games and played in 43, just because a guy will miss 5-10 games a season that doesnt make him injury prone in most people's valuations, if a guy is missing more than a quarter of a season that is something else. He used to be more injury prone but over the last few seasons he has been healthy and unlucky

Chychrun is also highly overrated. His entire value was made up of the idea that he's signed long-term and cost controlled. With the cap expected to go up, their leverage kind of disappears. Chychrun is hurt and that hurts his value more. Boeser is different because he was literally extended 6 months ago or something.

Boeser has missed 20+ games every year ignoring the bubble year. Just because he doesn't miss 50 doesn't mean he isn't injury prone.

Not sure how people can look at the state of Ottawa defensively and think it makes sense to trade JBD and a 1st for Horvat. Ottawa's back end is brutal. They aren't gonna be seriously competitive in the Atlantic with that blueline (especially with Zub out), giving up a 1st should be off the table unless you're making an impact add to the back end. JBD should also be off the table, he's going to be part of the solution to that problem. To give up those pieces (or equivalent value) for a rental C you know from the second you make that move you have no hope of re-signing would be a nearly fireable offense imo.

Not interested in Horvat on a rental for a 1st and a A/B prospect. If Norris makes it back this season then that's a hefty price for a 3rd line player. Ottawa needs to address the back end, not the forward group scoring at the 5th best goals per game rate in the league.

before that yes, but of recent, no. if he missed 20 i would be worried and I was in 19-20 but he hasn't done that since 18-19 where he missed 23

Chychrun and Boeser have the exact same term remaining on their deals.

Nobodies leverage disappears because of the cap going up, that's ridiculous. A good deal now is a great deal with a higher cap. Chychrun's value is lower right now because he's hurt, but that doesn't change the odds of him actually getting dealt in any significant way because teams still want him and he's a good player, it just means the return might be lower.

Leverage doesn't disappear but demand does. When demand disappears, leverage disappears. Chychrun's got a decent value deal, but he's not in demand anymore because teams can now spend more on defense and aren't as desperate for those kinds of deals. Chychrun's different because he's a run of the mill 2nd pairing D man that is greatly overrated.

Boeser's a forward with many flaws himself, but the fat is both will have less value because of injuries. A wrist injury for a goal scorer is going to scare teams away. He's a good player but he needs to prove there's no lasting damage

Things have quieted down on Chychrun because the season has started and he's injured, not because teams suddenly aren't interested in him anymore. He's still probably the best defenseman available to add to your team, but now teams have no reason to add him at this particular moment. Arizona could trade him in a minute right before he becomes healthy.
