Muzzin may be out for the season and beyond

Created by: GMBL
Team: 2022-23 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Nov. 3, 2022
Published: Nov. 3, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Chris Johnston said something that implied that Muzzin's season and potentially career may be over.

The Leafs have been rumored to be shopping Engvall and as well as looking to add a veteran D to help their PK. I think ideally the Leafs would want a RHD but I'm going to go with the less than ideal scenario. This is a small trade assuming that the Leafs still have hope that Muzzin could return next year.

Let me know your trade candidates for the Leafs can make other than Chychrun, Jensen, Mayfield, DeMelo, Dillon or a SEA D-man

Same reason they hated Gardiner, made one too many noticeable mistakes. Doesn't help that Holl isn't playing well this season. I should make a poll though for it.

every D makes mistakes in this game of fast up tempo play. he’s got great size and his numbers over the last 3 years looks great for a guy making 2 mil per season, but every other post has him being moved for peanuts.

I know but they just want someone to blame, and Dmen that play top 4 minutes are low fruit especially when the media/analysts are tearing their game apart.

He's being traded for peanuts because he's a Leafs player, and if he's traded for more other teams fans are going to get mad. If Holl gets traded for a similar player on another team, he's usually packaged with picks.

Just some random rumor post, might not be reliable at all. I'm sure Kerfoot is being shopped too.

Boston has no use for Engvall and they need to shed Reilly cap hit. Retaining and taking back similar cap hit defeats the purpose of trading him. Better off just burying him.

I figured the 1-year though would be preferred over the 2-years. I saw that Smith was also available, so was guessing it was to make room for Pastrnak's extension.

(edit: Thought Smith had 2-years, just saw that there were a ton of guys coming off the book next year for the Bruins).

I expect the Leafs to attach a couple of picks and prospects to get rid of that Kerfoot value, no one is doing the Leafs any favours and his contract is a negative value

No it’s more for cap this year when Mac comes off LTIR. Getting him off the books next year is a bonus, it’s going to happen anyway just doing it sooner.

Ya, crazy, only 5 forward signed for next year.

Probably not, I just made random lines. He will likely be getting a lot of Muzzin's minutes. No rest for Holl.

Edit: I just checked and Muzzin was averaging 16 minutes in the 4 games he played, and not 20+ like previous seasons. In the 7 games Reilly played for Boston he averaged 17.

Lol, that assumption had nothing to do with "[my] sources"- I'm not going try to verify trade rumors anyways. I just didn't look into the reason why the Bruins were shopping Smith and Reilly. Now that I know they are trying to make space to reactivate McAvoy, it's clear that Boston doesn't want to take on cap or retain on Reilly.

As for helping the Leafs, if the trade helps them they could care less. The problem here is that the mock trade doesn't help them.

If you're looking for LHD I wonder if Arizona's non-Chychrun names are of any interest - I think they'd move Ghost with retention for a decent pick, and part of me wonders if they'd be happy to cash in Valimaki for a mid-rounder after getting him for nothing off waivers.

If you want a 2-year Muzzin replacement that's less offensive, Radim Simek might be available from the Sharks. As far as rentals, there's not a ton of sexy stuff out there - maybe you can pick up Justin Braun from the Flyers?

I don’t think smith has been available.
Teams absolutely do care if they’re helping a team that they could easily face in the playoffs…cmon.

I'm not saying they don't. I'm saying that teams make trades that help both sides even with division rivals if they have to. (ignore the fact that my assumption was incorrect and therefore the trade isn't doing anything for Boston). I'm also saying that I don't think Boston sees Toronto as a threat. So, giving a guy that they waived isn't an issue. As for the retention, it's to make the trade cap neutral since Toronto isn't going to do Boston any favors. The issue with the trade is the incorrect assumption that I made.

You literally just said they don’t.

Divisional opponents make trades, but it’s incredibly rare that buyers make trades with buyers in division.

Bottom dwelling montreal making a trade with contending toronto or tampa? Sure. Boston and Toronto? They don’t even answer the phone.
