Easy pass by Chicago...a 1st and Niemela probably doesn't get it done.

There is also little to no chance, SJ retains $26.5M of dead cap space over 5 years

If I was the Toronto Maple Leafs, I would simply make sure that I won enough games that I didn't have to play a game 7 in the first round.

You don't have to break any curse here, you just have to hop right past it.

i wish we could, but chances we face another good team in the first round are extremely high, we are in the east sadly. teams are stacked over here

That San Jose trade is insanely bad for the Sharks. Here's a few reasons why:

-Willie's contract is up after next season. I don't think the Sharks are ready by the end of next summer, so I think it's very likely Nylander serves out his time in San Jose and moves on as soon as the clock strikes 12:01 on July 1, 2024.

-You're asking the Sharks to retain something like $25M over the next 5 years - a literally unprecedented amount - during a season when he's playing at probably the highest level he has since he left Ottawa. I don't know what kind of compensation $25M in retention would cost, but I think it would *start* at the pair of 1sts you have included here. San Jose might want to move cap, but they're not going to eat all that money on an actually useful player just for the fun of it.

-James Reimer has a 5 team NTC. James Reimer is a former Leafs goalie. James Reimer's wife, April, once had a night where she received dozens of death threats from Leafs fans because James had a bad game. James Reimer's NTC is probably just "Toronto" written 5 times.

That Chicago trade is also pretty bad for the Hawks, and while there's only one reason why, it's pretty obvious: any team that's interested in Patty Kane will only have to offer up their 2023 1st and this trade is beat. You gotta give Chicago *something* for them to retain $5.25M on a guy at Kane's level.

I don't particularly enjoy playing this game, but I think it's important to point out that losing it hasn't really mattered whether it was a good team (Boston/Tampa), Ok team (WSH), or bad team (Columbus/Montreal).

Again, I'm not banging the "hahaha Leafs game 7!!! LOLZZZZZ", because I think that's dumb...but the "We always play the best teams!!!" narrative is a bit of a stretch.

1) Willie has an extremely team friendly deal - they can easily swap him for similar to what Kane would fetch; he also has no NMC so this would be easy
2) Im confused why this is so bad then... The trade starts at 2 first... okay Ive got them there plus I added Nylander (very team friendly). So what is the value off by? A 3rd or a 2nd? if you think of Reimer being included?

What? Absolutely not. Retaining $25 mil they aren’t giving up any assets

as a long time sharks fanatic, this is a more than fair deal.
the only argument is why retain so much on Karlsson when for the first time since we got him he looks like Karlsson.
i would not be angry at this deal but I don't think either team bites honestly.

to your first point: if that's your response, my response is that I'd prefer those assets from *you* instead of having to do the legwork myself. Nylander doesn't fit the Sharks' timeline, so it doesn't matter how team friendly his deal is - even if they accelerate their rebuild timeline, he's going to need a raise by the time they're close to contending again.

to your second point: i honestly don't know what the value is off by because no team has ever retained that much money for that many years. Claude Giroux's $4.1375M retention last season is the highest retention to date - and that was only for the last 1/3 of the season. This is $1M more over 4 full seasons and whatever is left of this. I think you'd probably have to give up at least 3 1st round picks to get San Jose to tie up one of their 3 retention spots for the next 5 years at that much money - remember, they're already retaining 3x$2.7M on Brent Burns' deal, so they'd be a rebuilding team with only one available retention spot through at least 2025. That's just an insane amount of dead cap for them to carry, especially considering that Karlsson is playing at an incredibly high level and doesn't *need* to be moved right now.

And again - I would personally be shocked to see Reimer approve any trade back to Toronto. It's not just a case of him butting heads with a coach or GM - dude's wife was deluged with death threats because he lost a hockey game. I don't know if you've ever been married or not, but I don't think that's a conversation any husband is going to want to have to broach.

I don’t know…just win the division and get a wildcard matchup.
