Sharks wouldn’t try and acquire a guy like Marner at this point, they aren’t close to contenders and he would leave in free agency. They would just flip him for more picks/prospects

Wow this one is bad. We might need to add in Nylander, lily and a few more firsts.

Karlsson for Marner would be more like it. One overrated and overpaid player for another. The big problem is Karlsson isn't the type of defenseman the Leafs need, they need a big physical guy who's either a shutdown type or a good two way type not an "offensive" defenseman. SJ probably doesn't want a guy like Marner right now either.

They would take this deal in a second and flip him for a ton.

Karlsson won't have a lot of value.

His amazing play so far this season might convince a desperate team like Toronto to take the risk of his contract. But it won't convince them to give up huge assets.

Something like Karlsson with retention for a few shorter term cap dumps like Murray, and then some draft picks or prospects.

Look at that Burns was traded for. Teams simply aren't giving up assets for risky contracts with term.

Dude, c'mon. Marner is not overrated nor is he overpaid. The kid can play the full 200 ft game. Karlsson is having a good season, but no way he maintains. That contract will be an albatross for SJ for the next number of years. There's no moving it without retention and minimal return.
