Didn’t he already clear once this year? Why would NYI claim now?

You're missing a certain defenseman making 9.5M

They put him on waivers a second time after exactly 30 days (i.e. as soon as he was waivers eligible). I guess they're hoping someone has an injury or something.

$3M AAV is a lot for a #7/AHL caliber defenseman.

Reilly can be good #5 and play higher with a good partner at times. He isn't a 7th or an AHL D.

That certainly isn’t what he is.

He’s a great puck mover and plays a solid two way game. Isles could use an upgrade at 3LD

How? Is someone going to come out and say, “I hereby declare Mike Reilly a #7 D?”

He'll most likely clear waivers because most good teams are cap strapped/use LTIR and most bad teams don't want to get better.

Jarred Tinordi was claimed on waivers, doesn't mean he's a good NHLer.

That 2nd year would probably make the Isles pass. If he was only on a 1 year deal they would have more interest.

If a team like the Ducks won't take him, despite arguably having the worst defense on paper in over a decade and having multiple defensive injuries to deal with, then I don't know what other proof you need. It's not like they can't afford a $3M cap hit.

I'm all for it, wanted Reilly bad back when he was a UFA in 21. Would prefer if we could offset his cap hit somehow in some type of trade, but the Isles do have cap space to play with both this year and next. Should be able to make it work for the value that he could potentially bring.

That could mean about a thousand other things. Maybe they don’t want to take on payroll. Maybe they want the cap space next season. Maybe they’ve decided to be bad and get a high pick. Maybe they want to play youth.

You aren’t looking at many, if any variables here.

If he's regularly a healthy scratch, and no teams will take him off waivers, then he's by definition a #7 defenseman. If he clears and Boston sends him to the AHL, then he's an AHL defenseman.

Like I said, I guess we'll find out tomorrow.

He’s not a regular healthy scratch.

The NHL has a salary cap.

Again, you’re just looking at this without examining any variables.

Like i said, how do we find out tomorrow? What happens that determines anything?

If he clears waivers and is sent to the AHL, we'll have our answer.

I don’t disagree, I just can’t see Lou changing his mind one month later. Maybe I’m wrong though

I think after he clears, a Reilly for Panik deal makes sense.

How will we know that a defenseman playing in the AHL is an AHL defenseman?

Do you not understand that the NHL has a salary cap? There are implications around that.

Also theres a 0.0% chance he actually plays in the AHL. Even when he was buried for cap purposes, he remained with the team. Wanna guess why?

I do understand that there is a salary cap. I also understand that not every team in the NHL is a cap team. There are 7 teams in the NHL that could fit his contract right now, without having to utilize LTIR or make another move, at least 3 of which could use immediate defensive help.

Because Boston didn't want to completely destroy any remaining value he has?

Most of those teams are going for a youth movement. Reilly doesn’t fit there.

The islanders are the one that sticks out. I think there’s a good chance they claim him.

No, it’s because he’s still a part of this team. I’m sure they want to keep him, but juggling the LTIR is difficult.
Bottom line, I don’t know if I can help you if you think he’s a 7D in the NHL. His play has been so far above that. It seems like you found a narrative you like, and are either ignoring information, or shaping facts to support it. I don’t really have time for that.
