a) 84 days ago, Monahan was priced on open market as negative 1st round pick. Let’s say that pick is valued as #19 pick (the average draft position for Calgary of last three years. (=-4.2)

b) Let’s also say the MTL 3rd round is a highest pick in 3rd round (=1.1).

c) I am going to be generous on Harris and say he has early 2nd round value (=2.2)

d) we have seen similar retention on recent trades, such as Foligno deal, so I would value it at a 4th round pick (=0.3)

NJD side…
a) 126 days ago, Nemec was drafted #2 overall. (=12.3)

b) Bernier is a tough one since there is injury risk, but make simple and let’s say he his 50/50 to perform this year (so even chances he has positive value or negative value). if he plays, he’d be worth a mid-round pick, if hurt, he would be a slight negative (50% x 0.4 + 50% x -0.2) (=0.1)

In sum…

MTL= -4.2 + 1.1 + 2.2 + 0.3 = -0.6 (equivalent to MTL paying a late 3rd round pick).

NJD=12.3 + 0.1 = 12.4 (equivalent to a #2 pick).

So, in short, take out Nemec and it’s probably close to a fair deal.
