All are overpays, the only reasonable overpay is the MTL trade if the market is the same as last year. I don't think Hughes retains on multi-year deals, he might on Hoffman but I doubt that he would on Edmundson if he has that value.

Kerfoot and Kapanen have the same production, but if they continue at this pace, neither would be getting 3m+ in Toronto. Kerfoot is a ufa so the Leafs get out of that, while Kapanen still has a year. There would need to be retention on Kapanen's contract, and the only way Pittsburgh accepts Kerfoot in exchange is if he picks up the pace.

Sandin for Barbashev in a 1 for 1 is a mistake, let alone a 3rd on top.

Jensen is Holl on a different team, playing well, he's not worth giving up a 1st.

If the Caps continue to struggle, they may consider this without Holl (and instead let Alexeyev play), but given Washington is still nearly .500 with $40 million in salary hurt and not playing, I don't see a full collapse in the future. Missing Carlson, Orlov, Brown, Wilson, Oshie, not to mention Backstrom who could end up returning, leads me to believe this is a short term struggle.

MTL might retain on Edmundson because no way someone would want Drouin or Dadonov even half retained
The only change I would do is getting the 2023 1st RD pick because they are in the same division

Value wise that's great for Barbashev. Don't think the needs are met though.

Pittsburgh accepts hoping the change in scenery helps Kerfoot. They're done with Kapanen.

I think the amount of retention that the Leafs would want would require that Kerfoot picks it up a bit. Kapanen had similar production as to Engvall (2.25m), so they would probably want Kapanen at 2.5m at most. On the Pittsburgh side, that would be like having Kerfoot at 4.2m and having to pay Kapanen 700k next year too. That's an easy way out of Kapanen's contract but that's the best case scenario imo. I think Kerfoot needs to be playing like a 4-5m player for the trade to happen.

More than likely though they would be offering Engvall if they are at all interested.

caps probably accept if they are selling but I assume in this scenario w/ over 4.5M in cap space both the leafs and caps would prefer Holl and Engvall to not be part of the deal.

Kapanen just saves some money for this season and has been a good fit in Toronto at the time he was traded and could be a good addition for them again that would be good for next season as well.

I don’t know about the whole Barbashev thing cause I know he’s struggling but literally the whole Blues team is. And if the Blues go in a retooling or rebuild direction, Sandin is a young defencemen that’s sort being hated on big time by Leafs fans. That doesn’t mean much but if Sandin continues struggling a good amount of his value would be killed.

The whole Justin Holl thing is just weird. At least with Nick Jensen there isn’t really a whole lot of complaining on him. But then again I guess that’s just Leafs fans for you

Barbashev looks like a top 9 F who had one outlier year, not really a need for the Leafs. They just want him cuz he can hit (they probably saw what he did to Girard in the playoffs).

Any top 4 defenseman or young defenseman with high potential will face the furry from certain Leaf fans for mistakes. They will trade for similar players or worse who are doing well on other teams sometimes in lesser roles. I see Holl+ for 5th/6th.

Kapanen could be a good fit but I don't see the Leafs allocating 3.2m to him. I do hope he does end up back in Toronto, he seemed to really like it there and was liked too.

Barbie has been a guy playing lots of penalty killing time and Was apart of the leagues 5th best penalty killing percentage last season. I don’t know what Sandin’s value really looks like considering he should be making progress. Not sure if really is or if Leafs fans are just over-exaggerating.

So it's Barbashev+Kapanen to replace Kerfoot and Engvall then in terms of role. It's not a bad idea but I don't like the assets that are leaving for the Leafs, they have an aging D-core and having guys like Sandin and Liljegren grow into a top 4 role will help them a ton especially if they can do it by next year (the final year).

Funny, I almost called out MoreHitz's earlier for not reading the description when I saw his original comment. Luckily, it occurred to me that you might have edited the description after.

I didn't think it was at first but that "okay" seemed like it could be a reply to his comment, so I was at 50/50. With each comment though I learn more towards you editing it, I'm going to just take this last comment at face value and assume you didn't edit it lol.
