Getting Younger

Created by: Dr_Invictus
Team: 2022-23 Calgary Flames
Initial Creation Date: Nov. 9, 2022
Published: Nov. 10, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Since the start of the 2005-06 salary cap era there have been 19 teams with an average of 30 or older. Only one has won the cup (Detroit in 08). Calgary is the 5th oldest team in the league at just over 28 years old. They look slow and need some youth and speed in their lineup. The way I see it, Calgary lost their best Playmaker and their best Finisher. They can't control the tempo of play like they did last year, and the 2023 draft is an opportunity to retool the roster.

I'm assuming Tanev's injury is minor as they said 4 games. Huby could be out long term considering he is in a walking boot. Sutter playing 4th liners on the top line and demoting 1st line players isn't going to spark this team. This team also isn't going to beat any of the heavy weights this year. Let the kids play and recoup some assets for next year when the cap is higher and Calgary will have more leverage to deal. There needs to be a shakeup of some sort.

Buffalo accepts easily. Mitts is expendale to us, you could have him for a 2023 2nd tbh, but a hockey trade probably makes more sense

I would be more interested in the trade around Mittelstadt + Jokiharju + 2nd/3rd for Tanev + Toffoli.

Sabres don't need either Toffoli nor a center prospect. The only positive is trading Mittlestadt

Toffoli could come in handy, but I would certainly prefer Tanev. Toffoli would replace Mittelstdat in squad, Asplund could play 3C well.

The problem is Mitts is pushing Quinn out of the line up all the time

This is strange, but this is a question for Granato, analytics show that Quinn was very good. On the other hand, Granato might also prefer to play Hinostroza over Quinn, even if we trade Mitts.

Objectively, this should be it for mittelstadt. I worry that the Sabres will double down and try to sell us on him being part of the future- with all of the prime extra ice time that comes with it. If that's the plan, I'm all for the take their toys away approach. Unfortunately, Toffoli and pettersen do nothing to address shortcomings on this team.

Just wait until next season, bring up Pelltier and Zary? (I think he's been lighting it up this year?). No need to trade tanev or toffoli.

I would imagine 3 years ago all of comments about Casey would have been said about Tage.
Let's put our trust in Granato, he has done well thus far.
Maybe he sees Casey is good at FO and 83% of his assists are primary.
Is he our answer to our #2 center, not likely.
Is he on pace to 50 pts this year, yup.
Would I make this trade, maybe, but it would block Quinn.

I've only watched a few Buffalo games this year, but I thought they have looked so much better. I could see them passing the first round if they hit the end of the year with momentum

I think Calgary should make some space on the roster. Sutter is notorious for overvaluing 3rd and 4th liners at the cost of alienating talented players. I would have suggested trading some of the "depth" guys he leans on, but I struggle to think of who would want them. Without Gaudreau and Tkachuk Calgary is having issues on transition and giveaways. BT needs to limit Sutter's options and give those kids some ice time.

Interesting, I don't disagree on bringing up some youth, but I would keep Tanev for developing young guys and I like Toffoli, not liking him on the top line but I think he slots in to the second or third nicely.

Tough game in Boston, I don't want to start panicking like a leafs fan, but this starting to get hard to dig out of.

We have lost 4 in a row and are now 7th in the division, and we are .500. That's our division, merciless. A couple missteps and you're cooked.

Agreed. I think he was mocked as high as 3rd or 4th in a weak class. I think it came out thar most of his footage was him toe dragging high school kids that could barely skate backwards, and it was disquieting that most of his points were power play points. Then the pull up fiasco at the combine. He was gifted a spot, which he couldn't keep, and went to the ahl to learn how to play center, and I believe he was a minus player in most of his ahl games, on a team with no minus players. The jig was up for a lot of Sabres fans then.

I agree with both statements. I just had to look at who would be willing to part with and who would be wanted. Tanev is a good shut down dman, but does he have more upside then kylington or zadorov? I think Toffoli is a great 2nd line winger, I just don't see Calgary getting a top RW in this market. We don't have the assets to acquire one, so I figured sell and try again next year.

Bruins game wasn't as bad as the last 5 games, but man Pasta looked good. That's what Calgary is missing... A 23 year old Jerome Iginla

I say Mang is on the block because of his cap hit, I like him, he's good, I think he can potentially be better, I don't see him slotting in the top line, maybe on the RW?

While Huberdeau's out I would like to see Dube or Mang on the top line, Ruzicka did OK, it just seems weird that he's a scratch, can't fit on the bottom 6 and then he slots in to the top slot?
