I think OTT wants to move Zaitsev's contract as they upgrade their defence, but they don't want to bleed assets either. Minnesota is in no position for them to take on that contract, and I think the cost to dump Zaitsev to a 3rd team would be too rich for Ottawa. They likely wait until the ask on Chychrun drops or he proves that he's worth the ask.

They probably want the team to look very good, both on the NHL level (good contracts) and in the system (good prospect pool), in terms of having a promising future since the team is up for sale.

All I see is Kastelic for Dumba.

Yeah I think that's good perspective. I understand that the business side of things for OTT will maybe play a more prominent role in hockey decisions than you would normally expect or see in other markets. And as a result, they're probably going to be pretty measured in terms of what moves are made.

All of that is to say something like this probably doesn't do enough to justify it, given everything else going on.

No that's the trade. 1-1 with retention. The workshop reference was just to allow for people to suggest alternatives, edits, etc.

Is it bad that I almost want to say no from Ottawa's perspective. I like Kastellic but you gotta take this deal if you're Ottawa.

That's all there was, Kastelic is probably the piece he wants for Minnesota and Dumba the one that fills Ottawa's need. So it would probably be Kastelic+picks and he didn't want to bother with trying to balance the trade.

Edit: nvm lol

I can appreciate the reservation. Kastelic is a good role player and under cost control. Which is exactly why I looked at him in the first place. MN has 2 more years of dead cap and he'd be a very cost-effective player to help us limp through that.

that's exactly what the thought process was. I didn't feel like arguing over the balancing pieces. Kept it as 1-1 to get more engagement from OTT fans.
