Bottom 6 change up

Created by: brgh4life
Team: 2022-23 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: Nov. 13, 2022
Published: Nov. 13, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I would prefer JP, but I don't think Edm would take Kap considering JP is on a 1 year deal and Kap is signed through next season. Put Carter on the 4th line (reduce his defensive role) and call up DOC to center that line. Poehling doesn't show me much, Poulin doesn't look like much of anything either so they get sent down.

Give Teddy the promotion to 3rd line and give him a new playmaking winger in Yamamoto.

Pens decline. Kapanen has been the better player. They shouldn’t be retaining. DOC didn’t show much up here either. Honestly Poulin showed the most but would much rather just keep Hallander in the lineup when Blueger comes back than Poulin, Poehling, or DOC

I’m not really sure if id want Yams over Kappy. Differences are Yams has played with both McDavid and Draisaitl and production has been off big time. Same with Puljujarvi. But I will say that I would want to see JP in Pittsburgh. If you’re just going to play Yams with Blueger then it’d just be better to play him on a line with Kappy instead of trading for a player playing worse than Kappy. And as of right now I’d want to keep McGinn-BJC-Heinen together. Seems they’ve got something going.

Hallander hasn't even had a shot attempt through 2 games. DOC had 5 scoring chances and 4 high danger chances in 3 games. Poulin had just 2 scoring chances in 3 games. DOC is also a better defender. It really isn't close.

McGinn Carter Heinen were decent in Washington, but got their asses handed to them in Toronto and Montreal. They combined for 2 scoring chances for and 12 against with 1 high danger chance for and 7 against in Canada. I'm done watching Carter have any significant TOI.

Crosby has only had 1 shot the last 2 games. We should bench him too. Hallander plays less than 10 minutes per game on the 4th line and pk. I’m not expecting him to get much in the way of shots. DOC has played with mostly middle 6 players in his brief time. And he may have more HDCF than Poulin but Poulin has more HDGF while on the ice.

However the team overall played best with Hallander in the lineup. I think that has a lot to do with being a ball of energy and grit.

Funny you say that when Big Jeff Carter has still been one of our more consistent offensive producers currently the only thing there’s missing is goal scoring on his part but that’s about it. Not to mention he’s playing third line minutes and has 8 points in 12 games. Don’t know what else you’d want 🤦🏽‍♂️

You included the PP? The numbers I post when discussing line play are 5v5 only. A single secondary assist on the power play isn't going to impact my choice.
Also, Hallander has no impact on the game. A late block in Washington was cool, but he is outshot and outchanced by a large percentage. He hasn't even attempted a shot on goal.

He has 3 points at 5v5. That's 10th among Pens forwards. At this point in his career his bigger scoring impacts will come on the 2nd power play and penalty kill. He doesn't need to be used at 5v5 for significant minutes, that's why I have him on the 4th line.

His best winger is Heinen and McGinn so far. But it’s really only him and McGinn that are more willing to take the shots

On the season Heinen is right were he needs to be, but he had a hot start and has slowed recently. He is sill the best bottom 6 winger we have. Kapanen's regression has really hurt the 3rd line.

Sure, Crosby didn’t have a shot vs Toronto. We should bench him too. And if you want to talk about being outshot and out chanced, the pens outshoot their opponents 15-8 with Poulin on the ice 5v5. The pens get outshot 10-11 when O’Connor is on the ice 5v5

Carter has 2 goals and 2 assists for 4 points even strength, 3 assists for 3 points on the PP, and 1 assist for 1 point on the pk. Carter has been fine. He had 19 goals and 45 points last year. If you’re getting that from your 3rd line center then that’s good.

It's not good enough. Carter was on the ice for the most 5v5 goals against last season among forwards. When he was on the ice the Pens scored 38 goals and allowed 49. He isn't outproducing his defensive liability at 5v5 and needs a reduced role because of that. Even this season the Pens are negative in shots, goals, expected goals, scoring chances, you name it with Carter on the ice at 5v5. He is a liability.

He’s a defensive liability, so let’s put him on a defensive checking 4th line that gets 70% defensive zone starts. That’s brilliant.

Lol, 4th line is just minutes, not deployment. You can easily continue to play Teddy heavy defensize zone starts while giving him extra shifts elsewhere that makes his total ice time 3rd line minutes. Come on man.
