Is there a second year to this? Because the team, especially on D, is significantly worse

The whole point of a rebuild is to trade for futures and spend a couple of years in the basement to collect high draft picks.

I would probably look to trade Garland/Boeser/Mikheyev for futures in the offseason, see if I could find a taker for OEL 50% retained, and take on some short term bad contracts for more assets

But you say small r. Makes me think you take those futures and trade for guys to fill in. 4/5 year rebuild and you are probably trading Demko and maybe OEL if you retain half.

Small r as in keeping Hughes/Pettersson/Demko and targeting prospects rather than picks

Kuzmenko is a good player but Caps aren't doing that. They've been burned too many times trading away their good young talent.

Considering the current state of CBJ, they pass.
