The term and cap hit of the contract prevents any movement of Karlsson.............

You're probably right but he might be moveable if San Jose decides to sell off and go full rebuild with a 5 year plan. In that case they just might be willing to retain enough money for 5 years to move him but then they'd want picks, prospects and young players in return not those guys. My guess is that'd take a good year from him now and at least 2 mil/yr retained, might take 3 mil/yr.

Retention is a complete different ball game for sure.......but even at a full 50%, he's just under 6mil a year. the last couple years of the deal will be almost unbearable at that price.

I dunno about that Karlsson is 32 now he'll turn 37 around the end of his last contract season (in May) and high end defensemen who are still good in their early 30's are usually pretty good into their late 30's too. Giordano for instance won the Norris at 35 was still very good at 37 and not bad at 38. Not sure about now at 39 but he's still probably one of the Leafs better defensemen.

But then there's his NMC.

Minnesota will never do this. They aren't trading those pieces and taking on player they don't need. They aren't messing up their cap more
