Hawks decline, Sandin doesn't fill much of any gaps for us and Kerfoot isn't useful at all to a rebuilding team

Kerfoot is just to make money work but could be flipped by CHI after for picks. If Leafs swap third for first? Can never have too many young dmen

Honestly want to hear the thought process behind that SJ trade.

They move down to rounds in the draft, lose their best player, AND have to retain 3.5 million for the next 5 years?

That contract has five seasons on it, Karlsson is having a good year but let's not act like this level of play will continue for many more years, might not even last the season

It’s still better for SJ to keep him than trade him for much less than nothing

Will this be the case in 3-4 years? They would likely die for a trade like this if the injury bug comes back or his play declines again

He is a contender for the Norris this season. His contract isn't pretty but no way is SJS retaining 3.5 for 5 years while paying a more valuable draft pick to dump him

Would you trade Tavares with 3 mil retained for a 2022 second round pick? I mean odds are his production will probably decline somewhat in the years to come.

We have too many young dmen, Sandin won't be valued in that trade by much and neither would Kerfoot so Chicago likely declines. You are better off sending both somewhere else first, getting more assets in draft capital to get Kane as ultimately that is what Chicago would want. They may even be entertained by Robertson + 2023 1st.

Definitely worth 11.5M for 5 seasons good, right? 35 points in only 50 games cause he continues to be injured is certainly worth paying that for

Lemme think, I'm San Jose's GM and I get this offer. I can either:

A: Continue to pay Erik Karlsson $11.5M for the rest of this season and the next 4, with the knowledge that it's likely he misses time each year, but will probably be a 0.5-0.7 PPG RHD for me when he's healthy, and hope that he can be a good mentor for the young players I'll be bringing through the rebuild over the next 3-4 seasons.

B: Trade my 2023 3rd for a 2023 5th *and* agree to eat $17.5M over the next 5 years to get him off the cap and save $8M/year during a period where, for the most part, cap space will not be as important to my rebuilding squad as it would be if I were contending.

Hmm, gotta think reallllll long and hard about this one.

Logan Couture: turning 34 this season, still owed 4x$8M, 29-team NTC
Marc-Edouard Vlasic: turning 36 this season, 3x$7M left, 29-team NTC

And when Vlasic's deal expires you'll have a 33 year old Tomas Hertl with 4x$8.1375M left.

They're locked into an aging core for *at least* the next 3 seasons whether or not they move EK65. At that point, I hang on to him and wait until there's less term on his deal when you have more options with it. Either he still plays at a strong level and retaining on the last couple years is more palatable, or he sucks and you buy him out and only have 4 seasons of cap penalties. But paying to dump him now when it doesn't put you in a position to accelerate the rebuild doesn't make any sense.
