Why CGY have to trade with MTL

Created by: LIRIK
Team: 2022-23 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Nov. 19, 2022
Published: Nov. 19, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Calgary can't trade any of their three 2024/2025 1st, they're all under condition in the Monahan trade. If they want to move another one of those 1st, it would have to be with MTL.

CGY could trade their 2024 1st to MTL. The 1st on the Monahan trade would lose the 2024 option, leaving only the 2025 CGY or FLO 1st option with the protections already included.

The trade is for Anderson, but it could be any other Habs player CGY would be interested in. MTL would have to take some salary back, not sure who it would be.

Or they could target another player from another team and trade their 2023 1st, but i think teams will want to hold onto those because 2023 is a deep draft.

Why would calgary pay a 1st for a cap dump after paying so much to get rid of a lesser one?

Noted. Let's talk again when he is traded for a 1st.

Calgary traded Monahan for cap space to sign Kadri. They had to clear over 6M.

How come 23 points in 65 games for 1 season costs a first to move but 32 points in 69 games fir multiple years is worth a first? Not to mention the guy who cost a first to move is out producing the guy that you think is worth a first…. It’s so backwards.

He's on pace for 25 goals. If he stays on that pace by the TDL and keeps leading the Canadiens forwards in hits, he'll definitely bring back a 1st. Don't listen to these haters!

Few people here only come to bash because they think they lose the trade, while they basickly can't manage a salary cap on 5 years or so nor know where the cap will be in 3 years!

So we will never talk lol. And right Calgary traded Monahan to get cap space to sign Kadri. So they can’t exactly afford to take on 5.5 million in cap lol. I mean math isn’t that hard.

You forgot to mention he is only on pace for 35 points and has a cap hit of 5.5 million for the next 5 years. And the fact that the flames don’t have the cap space for that trade if they really wanted to make such a bad trade.

Yes he's definitely more of a finisher than a passer. He finishes plays and he finishes his checks.

JVR had 23 goals and 38 points last season…. Why would teams not just look to acquire him for 1 season if that’s the kind of production they’re looking for?? Production from every other guy with 25 goals last year… 69, 52, 42, 44, 59 l. Keep dreaming on Anderson

I would say it's more of a Lehkonen-style trade.

Not expecting him to go to Calgary... But if he gets traded it's gonna include a 1st coming back.

Hold on.. Lehkonen @ 1.15M for 16 games with more points last year than Anderson is on pace for this year got a B+ prospect and a late pick in the 2nd round but Anderson @ 5.5 for 4 more years of insanely mediocre production will get a 1st?? I don’t follow that thinking whatsoever.

Barron was a 1st so he got a 1st and a 2nd.

They got a B+ prospect and a last 3rd of the 2nd round pick.. there’s a real life tangible return that anyone can find and you’re trying to convince yourself it’s a 1st.. that’s weird. By your own logic Calgary should be able to trade Zary, Pelletier, Coronato, this years 1st for Caufield right? That’s 4 first round picks, be crazy to turn down 4 1st round picks. More than they’d get in a top tier offer sheet right?

Goals can be weighted differently sure, but if you’d like to look at the whole picture as opposed to cherry picking, Lehkonen plays significantly better D, analytics darling, was analytically great on the worst team in the league last year, Lehkonen had a 1.4 G/60 with Colorado last year, 0.9 with Montreal, Anderson had 1.0, now Anderson has a 1.4 this season and Lehkonen 0.9 but is that strictly goal production worth a million dollars more this year? all while getting out produced in every other facet of the game?

None of the above even brings the wildly bad contract into context, 4 years of an average 36 points/82 games at 5.5 million and you want a similar return to 34 points/82 games at 1.15M and an expiring RFA..Montreal also got paid for the retention in that deal increasing the return. Ignore everything else in this comment other than the last paragraph. Just answer this part above

Sorry you can't get Caufield at all.

You are trying really hard to convince me that Justin Barron is not worth a 1st. It's true, being a RHD, he's actually worth like a 1st and a 2nd now

You are trying reay hard to convince me, and it seems yourself, that Lehkonen is a more valuable player than Anderson. It's not gonna happen. He's a better goal scorer and he hits a lot more.

Anderson IS overpaid by this year's standards. But by 2025... He will be in line with the market.

It's cool if you don't want him. Lots of GMs will be happy to get a player with his body type and north south game under contract.

Pacing 25 goals, he’s not much of a finisher. At least not enough to be worth 5 years 5.5 million lol.

Great, then teams will wait til 2025 to trade for him. Just as a reference…Fiala, over a ppg player and actual 30 goal scorer got a 1st and 2nd round prospect. And the kings got to sign him to a contract they were comfortable with. There is no way that Anderson gets almost as much as Fiala. Teams just don’t have the cap to take on that Garbo contract.

Go on.. finish reading the rest. You can see his argument is strictly goals and mine is frankly everything else. Take up your gripe with Johnny boy. Your point makes no sense. If it was just about goals Anderson would be worth more. It’s not. It’s about his contracts, lack of D zone ability and underperforming what he’s getting paid. You are arguing my point for me
