I think a 1st would get you Garland with max retention. Probably still an overpay

No team should retain 200k for 4 more years. That's just a waste for the Canucks.

you really dont need the retention, the leafs are not carrying 24 skaters including goalies.

Retention won't happen. Garland has too many years left to retain.

The retention is not needed as you have too many skaters. I think a first or Niemela would be the ask. Kerfoot just in there for cap reasons.

The issue with the Leafs is cap space for next season. Is Muzzin returning? Would there be enough cap space to resign Bunting, Kampf and others.
Might be a fair trade, (actually I think Canucks could get more) but don't know if it's a fit. Leafs might be more inclined to trade for rental winger.

Leafs are better off resigning Kerfoot for 4.75mx3 than doing this deal.

200Kx4 is nothing to retain in terms of cap. As for salaries, they would have to pay 4m total, so an average of 1m/yr. If Arizona can do 990Kx6 = average 1m in salaries/yr, then any team can afford that.

The only thing that really is wasted is the retention spot because 200k is an insignificant cap amount, as the Leafs can't even fit a player in that hit. It's an unnecessary retention amount to make the trade.

That what I meant. Retaining 200k is not the problem, but wasting a retantion spot is.

Why is there only 3 retention spots anyway? There would be more trades in general and especially at the deadline if the number was higher.

So, that teams can't circumvent the cap or make a super team out of pending ufas, if there were more then you just pay up in futures to stack your team.

If a team wanted Garland with max retention (2.475Mx4), it would cost a lot more than just a late 1st round pick

I didn't see the 4 years remaining. Garland is a cap dump with his contract. I can see Van not wanting to waste a retention slot on him when there are bigger fish to fry.

In what world is Garland a cap dump? Idk if you’re being a troll or not by saying that. Last season he was 29th in 5v5 points, above players such as Conner, Rantanen, Forsberg, Nylander, B Tkachuk, Zibanejad, Debrincat, and Tavares. He had a higher 5v5 P/60 than McDavid, Draisaitl, Pastrnak, Ehlers, J Hughes, Barkov, Panarin, Ovechkin, and Guentzel

He’s had a bit of a slow start this year sure (like most Canucks players), but he’s far from a cap dump. He has a more than reasonable cap hit for how good of a player he is

Nah, but I am obv low on Garland. He is a fine player to have if you can afford it, but on a cap strapped team, he isnt worth his cap hit. It's a bad deal. He is on the top line with 2nd PP and only has 3 goals for 9 points. He wouldn't get that deployment on a contender. I think the slow start is more of what he is. If he was a PK guy and wasn't afraid of his own helmet, I'd give him more credit(the helmet part was a troll).

This is the first year I haven't been able to catch a lot of Canuck games, what are the issues holding him back?
