Cap doesn't work for Vegas without more retention and/or more cap being sent back to Montreal.

Hoffman with $2M retention = $2.5M
Pitlick: $1.1M

Patrick: $1.2M on LTIR = -$1.2M cap space for Vegas
Brossoit: $2.325, buried, = +$1.2M cap space

Clearing Patrick and Brossoit leaves Vegas with the same cap space they currently have ($1.125M of LTIR unused). Adding Hoffman & Pitlick to their active roster would add $3.6M in cap obligations, meaning they'd need to basically find another $2.5M to clear - and there's really no one on their current roster that makes that much and would be expendable.

Vegas could just send Pitlick to the minors and he wouldn't count against the cap at all.

Ok, they're still $1.4M over then. Maybe it opens up who you can dump, sure, but the only guys that would fit that are your 4th liners (Carrier/Kolesar/Howden).

Point is, I can't see Vegas making any sort of deal where they're adding anything to their cap unless it's for an absolute difference maker.
