Devils aren't paying the islanders a 1st for an average 35 year old goalie who's a ufa

If yall are out of it why are you using picks to dump salary and using more picks to bring in Meier?

If you are out of the playoffs why are you trading a lottery pick?

Last year Giroux went half retained for a 1st, a third and Tippett. You think Mayfield goes for a 1st and a 3rd? no chance

I'd be pissed if Grier didn't take a two 2023 1sts trade for Meier. Insane

-Mayfield gets a Josh Manson package (2nd and a prospect). I could *mayyyybe* see him getting a 1st and a B-tier prospect if the Isles retain him down to $725K, but I don't see it being a 1st/3rd combo.

-I don't think this is horribly off on Varly, with a few caveats: he's gotta stay around that .914 SV% he's been at so far; the Isles *have* to retain him fully down to $2.5M, and it's a conditional 2nd that upgrades to a 1st with similar conditions to the MAF trade last year - I'm gonna assume anyone trading for Varly at the deadline is going to have a good idea that they're gonna make the playoffs, so the conditions would have to be more along the lines of advancing a couple rounds and Varlamov starting a certain amount of games. I think a .915ish Varly that's $1M cheaper than MAF would definitely be worth a similar return.

-I don't know why you'd do this, then - if the Isles are out of the playoff picture, why are you trading a pair of 2023 1sts (including a presumptive lottery pick in a stacked draft) + Beau and a 3rd for Timo Meier? I get that this team is more set up for a retool than a full rebuild, but this doesn't seem like the best use of assets.

-Similar feeling here - if the team's in the lottery, 2022-23 cap space is irrelevant and you can carry Bailey through the end of the year and save that pick. This summer you either buy him out and deal with a $1.167M penalty in 2024-25, or you can try trading him fully retained for a middling return (Bailey at $2.5M should be worth a mid-round pick somewhere).

Agreed. Why pay to move Bailey if the NYI's are out of the playoffs? Especially since it'll probably cost more than a 3rd do move him at the TDL.

All massive overpay with big media narrative/reputation behind it. Don't see that happening for mayfield.

As stupid as GMs are you cant take an overpay and pretend as if that's the norm

Mayfield starts at the Manson package that Colorado gave up last year.

The Manson comp works so many ways: Manson was 30 and a pending UFA at the time of the trade, Mayfield just turned 30 and is a pending UFA. Manson had 9 pts in 45 GP averaging 19:45 when he was traded; Mayfield has 6 pts in 20 GP and is averaging 19:16. Manson is list at 6'3", 218; Mayfield is listed at 6'5", 220. I could keep going, but you get the gist. The only difference is Manson could only get retained down to a $2.05M cap hit; Mayfield can be brought down to $725K, which opens up his market and could make more of a bidding war if the Isles put him on the block. So a 1st isn't an insane ask in this environment.

care to offer any evident refuting that? cuz Mayfield actually produces more than Manson did in Anaheim (7-17-24 in his last 81 GP going back to the beginning of last season; Manson was 4-5-9 in 45 GP when he was traded, which is about 16-17 pts/82 GP) and both of them are basically even in possession numbers (Manson was on ice for 50.8% of ES chances when he was traded with a 30/29 oiGF/GA; Mayfield so far is at 48.3% and 12/10.

Mayfield produces more offensively and more or less matches the possession numbers Manson had, at 1/3 the cost of Manson at last year's TDL. Open to any arguments you have against it, but I don't see any reason why the Islanders would accept anything less than what Colorado gave up for Manson last year if they're moving Mayfield.

NHL values are all about reputation.
Manson had a great one, Mayfield not so much. Is that deserved? Doesn't matter

and what are you basing this on? Mayfield averaged 21+ minutes per night over the 2019-20 + 20-21 playoffs - hell, in 19-20 alone he had more total minutes on ice than Manson had in his entire career up to the trade. Just struggling to figure out how a top 4 D on a back to back final four team would have a bad reputation.

Dude if you dont think Manson had a much higher reputation in the nhl than Mayfield you're a massive homer who isn't paying attention

dude if you think that NHL GMs are gonna look at "reputation" as a major factor in acquiring a guy i don't know what to tell you, and all you're gonna base your argument is something so nebulous as that i honestly gotta assume you've got nothing concrete to contradict.

if you want a better comp, brett kulak is a dude who had *never* played more than 71 games in a season, had never averaged more than 18 minutes a game, and had never scored more than 17 points in a season. Montreal thought so "highly" of his reputation that he didn't even average 13 minutes during their Cup run. fully retained he *still* cost more than what Mayfield would cost with retention and even Brett friggin' Kulak got a 2nd++ from Edmonton at the deadline last year.

seriously, if you want to bring a *single* thing to the table that is grounded in reality and not just based on some intangible reputation slider that you can't even really back up, i would love to see it.
