Because you’re afraid of trading with us? The value is basically spot on and the needs are filled for the Kings and for us.

Props for something new that I haven't seen yet. It at least gets me thinking, that's for sure.

It fills your biggest need. I admit it’s risky but it does help both teams.

For the second time in living memory, I'm going to disagree with my pal @tryger. As much as I love Viktor Arvidsson (and I LOVE Viktor Arvidsson), I'd do this. Although I can see the very compelling counter-argument that Hanifin has only one more season on his contract.

There's a lot to unpack here. It does fill our largest need of a big LD.

The risk to the roster for LA is in breaking up that 2nd line of Moore-Danault-Arvidsson. I'm not one who's extremely opposed to that because I think the chemistry comes from Moore and Danault, mostly.

Picks would need to be staggered instead of the same year, and having given up the 2022 first rounder I can't see LA being keen to move their 2023 (even before taking into account the historic draft 2023 is shaping up to be). I'm also still not sure the picks going Calgary's way are the right value. You're playing Arvy as a top line winger, after all.

And Phillips does nothing for LA. Not only is he tiny, which the Kings already need to start getting away from, he's another center for a team that has center depth down to the 8th or 9th C position. Kopitar-Danault-Byfield-Kupari-Lizotte-Turcotte-Thomas are the current ones, but Vilardi and Madden also have been centers.

Taking away the pugilistic player for LA leaves another hole in the roster, so maybe somebody that could replace that aspect coming back instead of Phillips. Not sure who that is on Calgary.

Again... alot to unpack from something like this.

Not saying all the above as detriments, just kind of thinking through it from an LA perspective. There's a framework that I think could work for both teams, but I'm just pointing out a couple of the sticky issues.

Partially, it's more I think the fit is wrong.

Short term the Kings are looking for a player to pair with Matt Roy, long-term they are looking for a player to pair with Brandt Clarke. Hanafin is a short-term solution to something the Kings might already have in Sean Durzi (albeit not as big or proven)

The Kings have several offense-first young players who have graduated or are nearly ready in: Durzi, Spence, Clarke, and Grans.

Their need is that 2-way pivot who can not only be an offensive presence but can shelter these offense first RDs.

Pair this with Calgary being more desperate as they expedited their cup window, blocking any success for their next two seasons will be paramount to any post-season success.

You know, at the end of my original comment I had written "Off the beaten path, I think Allard and Phillips are window dressing," and I wish that I hadn't decided to remove that sentence.

I think I'm beginning to push my chips toward defense-first LDs, Gavrikov would improve this team more than Hanafin would long-term.

The Kings have not shown themselves to be consistent enough to make such a large move for 1.5 years of a player who will demand a huge pay raise.

Right now our biggest issue is bleeding goals, we could add more goals to offset this with Hanafin or we can focus on getting tighter and more responsible defense. I see the logic though, just disagree with it.

True and very compelling. It bothers me that by the time all teams have played exactly 20 games, we will probably have given up more goals than everyone except bottom-feeders like Buffalo, Columbus, Ottawa and the teams behind us in the Pathetic. Even Arizona and Chicago may allow fewer than 68 goals. More to the point, most of the real contenders will have given up fewer than 60.

That's the issue, I feel like our identity changes every game. We need to decide if this is the stingy trap game Kings or the offensive fun team who lets in a million goals. Somehow Blake, Todd, and the rest of the staff have to marry these two cultures up so we keep some of that offense and return to our defensive roots.

Hanafin is a complete defenceman. You’re better off with him than Chychrun.
