A possible Meier solution

Created by: NHLfan10506
Team: 2022-23 New Jersey Devils
Initial Creation Date: Nov. 27, 2022
Published: Nov. 27, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Devils are worried about spending a huge sum for Meier, only to see us left with one season of him on a monster QO. Sharks are worried about getting full value for him while they can. Maybe this would be a solution?

What do you think?
Trades
1.
NJD
  1. Meier, Timo ($3,000,000 retained)
SJS
2.
NJD
SJS
  1. 2024 2nd round pick (NJD)
Additional Details:
* Conditional Pick

2024 2nd round pick that becomes a 2024 1st round pick if NJD make the 2023-24 playoffs and Meier plays in majority of playoff games. So essentially, its a pick between #17 and #48 in 2024 draft.

Should Meier somehow become a UFA this summer, it protects NJD from giving up the higher value asset.
3.
NJD
SJS
  1. 2025 3rd round pick (NJD)
Additional Details:
** Conditional Pick

2025 3rd round pick that (a) becomes a 2025 2nd round pick if NJD make the 2024-25 playoffs and Meier plays in majority of games and (b) becomes 2025 1st round pick if NJD make the 2024-25 conference finals and Meier plays in majority of games.

If Meier goes one-and-done in 2023-24 (either through QO or Arbitration) than NJD are protected from giving up higher pick.
4.
NJD
SJS
  1. Foote, Nolan
Additional Details:
Prospect for deal
5.
NJD
If somehow Meier escapes after a year, they deal would like this
    SJS
      Foote, Nolan
      2024 2nd round pick (NJD)
      2025 3rd round pick (NJD)
      6.
      NJD
If Meier extends, plays well, and NJD enjoys some success, the trade would look like this for San Jose
        SJS
          Foote, Nolan
          2024 1st round pick (NJD)
          2025 1st round pick (NJD)

          Will use different prospect

Point of the post was to put as much as the trade value as possible into conditions that protect us from Meier going one-and-done

IMO the best Timo option is to wait. We are rockin it right now no need to sell the farm and mess things up. The Sharks suck, and are going to suck for a long time, Timo has to know this. I say we wait and pick him up in the off season. Sign Bratt and then see what we have to fit him in. If he doesn't sign then ok. If the team tanks anytime before the off season and we see that we have to have Timo, then we figure out a way to pay more during FA or make a trade deadline deal. Holt will get his chance at some point this year to prove he is worth keeping, and I think he is. But I would take Bratt over Timo, and but would love to find a way to add Timo in FA.

Yeah I think it’s interesting but I still wouldn’t do it. Also giving up Holtz a 2nd and 3rd for the risk of only Meier as a rental is way to much. Meier to NJ starts and ends with an extension in place

Holtz is out. Foote plus picks.

I think Foote makes it much more palatable. Only thing I would also take out is the 3rd becoming a 2nd if they make the playoffs and just leave the upgrade becoming a 1st.

I’d be willing to go up to Shakir, personally

I think his upside is worth being patient for.
          Besides, Fitzy loves the guy.

          Could add Walsh maybe.

Prudent plan, like it. No reason to intro a new face, Chemistry is great & Palat still on the horizon at some point as reinforcement. Also agree, I'd prioritize Bratt signing first. He works well with both Hughes or Hischier & has put in the years.

Meier would be a good add depending on his extension
Wouldn't want to give up Holtz if his next contract is in the 8s

I’d imagine he gets Forsberg contract from teams that can afford it. Would much prefer him in Fiala range. Or Reinhart range if he wants short-term.
