1 Deadline Move and Knies

Created by: TMLBRIAN
Team: 2022-23 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Nov. 29, 2022
Published: Nov. 29, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Either trade for Horvat, O'Reilly or maybe Toews to get a big, 2 way centre. This would be wise for if Matthews or Tavares goes down with injury.
Sign Knies.

With how their defence is doing, I would stand pat to be honest.

O'Reilly may not be available but if he is, I think this package is fair. I would offer the same for Horvat. Less for Toews.

What are your thoughts?

I can't figure out if the Blues will be seller's or not. They're so unpredictable. Lose 8. Win 7. Lose 2. I'll say it again. The Blues have way too much talent to keep losing. I don't understand why they can't remove their heads from their arse's.

They seem to have done that. Now they're into somehow losing games they should have won by three goals. tears of joy

Yes for sure. I really like their team on paper. If they do sell, they will have 3 really nice pieces to sell in O'Reilly, Tarasenko and Barbashev. They could have upwards of 4 x 2023 1st round picks (with their own) and some later picks and prospects. 3 for sure with O'Reilly and Tarasenko both getting one and Barbashev could MAYBE get one. If not he would get a solid package regardless. This would be a good little sell off. They would be set up very nicely for next years and the years forward. But there is still a good chance in my mind that they don't sell and make the playoffs.

Calgary is the other team who I LOVE on paper and they have been severely under performing. I think they are 1 top 6 forward away from being a near perfect team. Maybe a coaching change might be needed in Calgary. That team is way too good to be this mediocre right now.

Huberdeau doesn't seem to fit in Calgary and they REALLY miss Tkachuk. Maybe Sutter will bring his team to his farm and they can shovel pig **** for a week. LOL

Horvat will cost more than that. If the Blues are buyers & sellers, then O'Reilly will also cost more than that. If they are sellers, it probably depends on the if they want Hirvonen or not. For Toews, the max would probably be that package but with the 2024/2025 1st with + a 2023 3rd instead of 2023 1st +2025 3rd.

I think Huberdeau needs to be left to do Huberdeau things. Can't put a guy like that in a box. Let him play his game. Let his line play a different style than the rest of the team. He is one of the best playmakers in the league.

Does it seem to be a chemistry issue or that he doesn't fit in the Calgary system?

That's just it. Sutter does Sutter things which means Huberdeau can't do Huberdeau things.

Horvat and O'Reilly will cost similar in my mind. Obviously Horvat is having the much better year, but O'Reilly has a pedigree virtually unmatched in the league. Bergeron would be the guy to beat him in that regard.

But I think the package will be 1st, 3rd, Cap going back (in this situation Kerfoot could easily be retained and flipped) and a solid prospect. I guess they will take the package with the prospect they like the most. They may require Niemela from the Leafs though.

Yea for sure. Hence a possible coaching change may be in order. That team is wayyyy too good on paper to be where they are at. I had them as #1 in the league in the offseason. I still agree with my assessment.

We're only 20 games in. I still expect Calgary to be Calgary again eventually. Same for the Blues.

Toews has same pedigree as O'Reilly (both Conn Smythe and Selke Winners). Toews is just the older (declined version) and a bit more successful (3 cups vs 1) version of O'Reilly. Horvat is going to get the haul that a goal scorer gets which can be very high.

If the Blues are in the playoff picture (but on the outside), they may be willing to downgrade O'Reilly to Kerfoot (depending on the contract situation) but the prospect would probably have to be someone that they really want.

Agreed. The year the Blues won the cup, I had them as my Stanley cup prediction that year, before the year even started. When they **** the bed at the start of the season, people wanted to blow up their team. I thought "Coaching change and small changes and I still believe in this team". They did the coaching change and did a goalie change and they won the cup.

I think Calgary is very much in that boat. They were my cup prediction this off season, for this season, and I am sticking to it. Small changes and maybe a coaching change may be in order.

I did think in the offseason and still think they, that they need 1 more top 6 forward. But there should be a lot of those floating around in the next few months.

Yea Toews is a future hall of famer 100%. But over the past 3 years or so, O'Reilly has been on of the best 2 way centres. Kopitar, Bergeron can be on the list as well.

And yes they would really need to like the prospect. I agree with that!

At the deadline, if they are sellers? Easily is the wrong word. They may want a different prospect. But this is the type of package that they would want and can expect.

Leafs need a top 6 winger more than a center for the 3rd line. Waive Engvall, he's useless. Don't think Robertson is NHL ready and needs another year with the Marlies. That would give you around 3.95 million in cap space to get a winger. Just a suggestion.

O'Reilly or Tavares can be put on the wing also. I would love a guy like Kuzmenko. But O'Reilly gives us the centre depth incase Tavares or Mathews goes down to injury.

Putting ROR on the wing would be a total waste of his talents and accentuate his weaknesses. He is not a winger. He is a center.
