Adding a Top 9 Forward

Created by: njlaforte
Team: 2022-23 Winnipeg Jets
Initial Creation Date: Dec. 1, 2022
Published: Dec. 1, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Here are 4 top 9 forwards that I believe could be added before the TDL.
Trades
1.
WPG
  1. Meier, Timo
Additional Details:
Is an RFA after this year so if he doesn't want to resign then you can recoup the value you would have to give up.
SJS
I think of the Artturi Lehkonen trade. A younger forward that is expiring as a RFA. Meier is better so I think a 1st and a prospect would work.
    2.
    WPG
    1. Garland, Conor
    Additional Details:
Signed for 4 years and would be a perfect fit with Dubois and KC.
    VAN
Would cost around a 2nd plus a prospect.
      3.
      WPG
      1. Reinhart, Sam
      Additional Details:
Not playing amazing but would be a nice add. Fits into our window as he expires at the same time as Scheif, Wheels, and Helle.
      FLA
I have no idea what his value is.
        4.
        WPG
        1. Toews, Jonathan
        Additional Details:
I have always wanted Towes on the Jets and this would be the year to get him. Expiring contract and could be resigned if he wants to stick around. Would probably have to get double retention to bring his cap down to 2.5M.
        CHI
With double retention, it would probably cost near a first in value.

Toews gotta be the most overrated player rn. The only reason he would fetch a 1st is on name value; he is an average middle 6 center rn. Not even a top 50 center at this point And I have a list so ill gladly send it

Garland has always been one of my top targets for the Jets this season. I think he would fit very well with this team. I wouldn't mind adding Toews to the mix either, perhaps not double retained as we could afford him at 50%.

Meier will bring back significantly more than Lehkonen. Lehkonen has never scored 20 goals, Meier has two 30 goal seasons and a few 20+ goal seasons. Lehkonen had a career high of 31 points, Meier is 77 and has had more goals in a year than Lehkonen has points.

Would a 2024 2nd and a prospect like Salomonsson or your 2023 1st be too rich for Garland?

Yes. I would move a 2nd and a different D prospect like Chisholm or even Heinola at this point. We have no RHD prospects other then Salomonsson so I would be hesitant to give him up.

Instead of a 2nd it would be a 1st and then add on a solid prospect with equal or greater value then Justin Barron.

Personally, I'd ask for Lucious. Van needs center depth just as much as they need defense help.

And Tazer is playing really well again. Scoring, great at the dot, solid 200 foot game. It may not last, but if he keeps playing like he has the first 22 games, he's worth a first w/ 50% retained

Toews will likely cost a 1st to the Hawks with 50% retained the way he's playing and assuming he waives for multiple teams.

He's either a decent top 6C or one of the better 3C's in the league. Toews, after missing an entire season, and struggling to come back last year from chronic illness, is playing like he did prior to the illness. He's never been a huge point producer, his game is a 200 ft game, physical and one of the best in the league at the dot. He's doing all the things well he always has done, albeit his defense isn't quite a as good as it once was but still good enough. Is his play alone going to generate a 1st at his age and cap hit, no, but collectively with his experience and leadership it does all day long.

he is a negative WAR player and negative defensive WAR player. He was much better back in 19-20, and was solid in 21-22. The only part of him that is worth a 1st is his name, experience and leadership.

It is totally possible that he fetches a 1st, but he is not the player he used to be. At least no stats really support that from what ive seen.

You have to watch him night in and night out, WAR on his own while better then standard deviations of stats, does not replace the eye test nor, as widely discussed by professional scouts and analysts, replaces the eye test or completely separates a player from the rest of his team. The Hawks are a very bad team, Toews is not the reason and has looked good. I'm not going to argue he's better then his 2019/2020 season as he broke out that season following a battle with back pain the two seasons prior, but he's certainly better then he was last year on a way worse team regardless of what WAR says.

These are all pretty good targets. Garland is my favourite target because of the contract and likely costs less to acquire than some of the other guys.
I just think the bidding war for Timo would be too high for the Jets to put forward a competitive offer that doesn't gut their future. If they could somehow get Reinhart without giving up a ton he would be the best impact imo.
