Anderson has literally been playing on the 3rd line dude. And yeah Johnsson is in the AHL because he’s not good enough for the Devils. A team that is easily one of the top 5 deepest teams in the league right now. You speak as if Kassian is an NHL player but if Johnsson was in Arizona he would be a fixture in their top 6 Kassian would be playing 3rd line in Utica. Bernier will probably be LTIRetired anyway so there no need to even dump.

Why would the Devils dump Bernier when he's likely just gonna be on LTIR for the rest of the year?
Why would the Devils dump Johnsson when his buried cap hit doesn't adversely affect the Devils cap situation?

But most importantly, why would the Devils trade a 1st + 3rd (or prospect) for Josh Anderson when he wouldn't crack the Devils lineup?
Even with Palat and Bastian out injured, please tell me which forward in the Devils does Anderson beat out for a roster spot?

If you trade Bernier, you accrue cap space throughout the year.
Johnson costs you over $2mm in cap space while in the AHL.

i'd much rather try for Tom Wilson than Anderson

And McDavid more than Wilson too, right?

That is your opinion (a wrong one at that) but not that of every GM in the league, many who have been calling about his availability.

my man how many top 6 wingers in the league have ONE 0.5 ppg season lmao

If the cost to accrue deadline cap space is going to be a 1st rounder, I'd just deal with LTIR - and for what it's worth, they're currently using about $3.8M of the $4.125 LTIR space, so if they trade Bernier, they lose that - which means, after dumping Johnsson's contract they *still* need to find about $1.5M to clear. Mayyyybe they get back under by running a 20 man roster for a bit, and then if you assume Schmid and one of Holtz/Zetterlund/other forward under $1M goes down when Palat & Blackwood come back, they'll have like $100K under the cap - which isn't really going to amount to much of anything at the deadline. At this point, moving Bernier off LTIR is going to cause a headache more than anything else - his contract (and Johnsson's) are gone after this year, so it's just as easy for them to hang on to them. And you know what? If they're still stuck on Josh Anderson this summer, they'll have the cap space to add him on to their roster without having to jump through these extra hoops to make it happen!

Anderson is not a "cap dump" though, he is a quality NHL top 6 winger, Johnsson is in the AHL cause he isn't an NHL player anymore and Bernier is too old and too injured to stay in the lineup.

No, he's not. He's 28 years old, which means he's almost certainly past his physical prime (his game isn't exactly cerebral) and hasn't played 70 games in a season since 2018-19. He's only scored 20 goals in a season once, and has never scored 50 points. Some quality top-6 forward. And, worst of all, he's signed for another 4 years at $5.5M.
