Description
I'm guessing that Dubas goes all in this year given the stage of his contract and the fact that soon he will need to reup all the big guns.

TOR
San Jose trades away: Karlsson, with 33% retained and a 3rd this year and get back Robertson and Malgin and a 2026 2nd, given that they are only retaining 33% so they are giving him away at a $7.65M cap hit the return seems fair. They get a chance to give Malgin a chance higher up the lineup like they did with Barabanov who they Leafs gave them for cheap and who then became a solid top 6 guy and they get a top prospect in Robertson who fits into their rebuild and can be in their top 6 for the next decade. Given the way the Burns trade went the value here is better for San Jose when you consider cap hit, Karlsson's age/skill and the return.

Arizona retains 50% of the remaining $7.65M, makes sense for them as this was a front loaded contract so they get more money towards the cap then they spend, they also get the Toronto 1st for their troubles.

Chicago then retauns $1.8M of the $3.8M remaining and get the Sand Jose 3rd for that which is an early third in a deep draft and the Toronto 2nd. Again they actually pay less than the $1.8M price cause of the way the contract is structured

To any team needing D depth for the playoffs, the Leafs have plenty and the cap space is more important

Trade just makes sense. Edmonton needs a defensive center who can kill penalities and someone with some finishing ability. Toronto can use a possession guy for deeper in the lineup

Only 2 teams can retain on 1 contract. So you are over the cap by about 1.2 million

Also, a 2024 first and a few minor pieces don’t get Karlsson at nearly 10 million retained.

I’d comment about the Canucks trade but after seeing that Karlsson trade it’s not even terrible in comparison

I pray to god that they don't empty the prospect and draft pool for one run. Especially for a roster that hasn't earned it yet

Will never understand how getting the best defensemen in the league right now at 7.7 is fair. That's insane value and you're way off with that return
