Players Leafs should not trade for

Created by: Brad_Treliving
Team: 2022-23 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Dec. 3, 2022
Published: Dec. 3, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Players Leafs should not trade for:

1) Garland (2P in 8 playoff games. Is another version of Alex Kerfoot but more undersized)

2) Patrick Kane or Toews (We already have the core 4, we don't need another big contract even with 50% retention)

3) Frank Vatrano (we already have Kerfoot. We will be getting another Kerfoot with term)

4) Max Domi (Another version of Kerfoot, has that fake toughness that is not good for a team, and also has 9P in 24 playoff games)

5) Gavrikov (I like what he brings but I don't want to limit Sandin's ice time unless he is replacing Holl)

Agree with you, some of those players don't add any value to the Leafs lineup, and the price to obtain them would be too high for minimal improvement.
Don't agree with your lineup you proposed, but Leafs seems to have the depth with the player in the organization to really go with what they have and not make any costly adjustments.

Ohh I didn't put much thought into the lineup proposal grin, I just wanted to see Kerfoot getting scratched lol

Well until someone plays better, he stays. I actually think Robertson has looked fine with his sporadic appearances. But Engvall, and Holmberg have been good lately which cuts into the "spares" opportunities to get into the lineup. Jarnkrok was looking good recently and now he's out for a couple of weeks. There's an opportunity for some winger. Leafs have had few injuries to their forwards this season. I'm sure there will be more and guys on the team get NHL ice time, and maybe even some Marlies will show their NHL value.

"Frank Vatrano (we already have Kerfoot. We will be getting another Kerfoot with term)"

This is exactly the reason why there would be any interest in getting him if he can be had at a lower cap with term. I know you hate the Kerfoot type but getting "a Kerfoot" that is more of a goal scorer than a playmaker with term at a lower cap hit isn't a bad thing. The bad thing would be acquiring him at a high cost which is what it would take. The alternative would be extending Kerfoot or getting a different "Kerfoot" if they aren't satisfied with having Jarnkrok already. There's a low chance that he gets replaced by a big, physical player that fills the same role.

It's not that I don't like Frank Vatrano, he could be an ok fit but why trade for a guy that is close to a $4M cap hit for the next 3 years, why do we need that? As a rental I'm fine with it but one thing I have learned is that you trade/give those type of contracts to difference makers. Vatrano is not that, which is also why I don't like that Jarnkrok signing to begin with

Don't worry, they won't take him at full cap hit (I don't think) and the cost with retention will be far too high for them to make a trade so they won't (I hope). Chances are that it leads nowhere. The only way I could see them taking on Vatrano at 3.65m would be if they expect to move on from Bunting. Then next year they will have 2 of Knies, Vatrano or Jarnkrok playing in the top 6. Robertson+picks probably get moved for Vatrano.

Rare I almost agree with @ Babatunde but I mostly do with this post. Only push back is comment about Toews or Kane or any TDL rental. It will all come down to acquisition cost; who cares what their cap hit is, as long as it fits. We need one impact forward (2W or 3C) imo, so Kane, Toews, O’Reilly, others should all be in the mix

I also forgot to include Klingberg
