How does Edmonton add a pick?
Why is Vegas giving up a pick for Bernier?

I believe we are fleecing Edmonton here. And I’m fine with that. But a realistic Severson-for-Bouchard deal would likely have Devils retaining and adding.

No way Edmonton does this. Bouchard is younger and better than Sevo right now.

Even if the Severson extension was 1mil for 8 years, I don't think EDM makes that trade. Despite his struggles this year, he's a blue-chip offensive RD; only way he's getting moved is in a package for a cost-controlled elite D.

Boeser for Severson with an extension makes sense, Van could send a UFA depth dman in the deal.

Sevo is an upgrade from Barrie.

What does Barrie have to do with a Severson for Bouchard trade?...

So the first place Devils tell upcoming Severson, "We want your ass outta town, so hurry up and sign an extension, so we can trade you to Edmonton. But if you don't extend, you are still welcome in the Devils family for a Cup run." Yep wanna in on that conversation.

Or they talk like normal human beings...

Nobody "wants his ass our of town", just everyone knows that his time in NJ is VERY unlikely to go beyond this season, including Severson and Fitz.

-Vancouver isn't trading Boeser in-season if all they're getting is a fringe roster player and a mid-round pick. If anything, it makes more sense to hang on to him til the end of the year when he'll only have 2x$6.65M left and more contenders will have the cap space available to make a pitch for him. Pass for the Canucks.

-Severson is a fine RD, and would be an upgrade over Tyson Barrie, as you said - which is why I'm confused that he's being traded for Evan Bouchard, and even more confused that the Oilers are adding a pick to a package for a rental RHD. Trading Bouchard like this would be the equivalent of trading Nico Hischier for JG Pageau during Hischier's down year in 2019-20 - would you have done that then? If the answer's no, then you know exactly why the Oilers hang up on this offer.

-Funnily enough, we have an example of a team trading an LTIR goalie for cap purposes from just this past summer - Dallas gave Buffalo a 7th to take Ben Bishop's deal off their LTIR, and to help Buffalo get to the cap floor. Vegas could benefit from Bernier's LTIR hit giving them a little more breathing room, sure, but Jersey also gets the benefit of not using LTIR (once Palat is healthy) and accruing actual deadline cap space. I think this deal gets done for FCs and that's it.

There are some sports radio hosts in Vancouver that think Vancouver MAY have to either attach a sweetner or take back a bad contract in order to move Boeser this season.
Personally, if they are going to finally commit to a very long overdue rebuild, I think Boeser is a piece they should hold onto. Trade your players that are having good years and Boeser will be back on the first line with EP by seasons end, then hope he can regain some value before trading him.
