Has Holtz’s stock plummeted THAT much? He’s still so young

I would take Debrincat over Holtz and Karlsson's contract any day of the week, Holtz hasnt shown much recently.

If this is just Cat’s rights for the year, and no extension, replace Holtz with a B grade prospect instead. That’s too much for a rental though

Holtz will be fine. He’s looked a lot more like he belongs since coming back from his AHL stint last week.
With that said, I would also prefer DeBrincat over that Karlsson contract and Holtz 😂

Sharks I think jump on that deal.
but you better make that Debrincat deal soon or the sharks will offer up Meier for the same Package.

Karlson at $8.5M is pretty good value; he has looked great this year and assuming he can stay healthy (mid level risk given his age & history), he’s a top 5 dman and perennial Norris candidate. And he clearly loves Ottawa so 🤷

He’s having a great season. But that great season is coupled with an uncharacteristically high shooting percentage, and numbers he hasn’t put up for years. At his age, this seems like more of an outlier

He is absolutely not a top 5 dman outside of this year though, hasn’t been recognized as on in Norris votes since 2016-2017, and hasn’t even received a Norris vote since 2018-2019 to be considered a perennial Norris candidate.

But he does love Ottawa!

He hasn't gotten a single vote for the Norris in several years... He's definitely having a Norris-calibre season, but "perennial Norris candidate" is a bit much.

I hope Ottawa trades for him just because it would be a fun reunion, but even at 8.5m there's a lot of risk for Ottawa here.

I think with the current salary cap, teams are losing leverage . Guys with 1 year left 4 mill are being taken advantage of and rebuilding teams are asking for 1st round picks

I think SJ would have to consider that. Would need Grieg in there with that kind of retention, though. Grier holds some cards here unlike people on here think, karlsson hasn't asked out and he's having a monster year, best year of his career.

Greig, Thomson, 1st, 3rd.

If it wasn’t clear, perennial Norris candidate refers to future years (not past since I don’t own a Time Machine). Clearly Karlson struggled to regain his previous standards following the Achilles injury, but he seems to have found his rhythm again and he’s only 32. I watched him play the Leafs.twice and he was skating and moving the puck like an elite defenseman again. He is clear front runner for Norris so far this year (admittedly only 1/3 through season).

More like the Sens fleecing the Devils in this trade (I'm surprised by this though and could be more of a DJ Smith effect)

Wishful thinking indeed.

If it wasn’t clear, this year is an outlier, and the contract will be a regrettable acquisition.

Oh my bad, Tbrew has spoken - thanks for clearing that up tears of joy. Time will tell if it’s an outlier, maybe he’s just finally healthy

Absolute NO GO

Thomson, Jarventie are pretty good prospects
Joseph is a decent versatile forward with great speed while you rebuild
A 1st and a 2nd is also good value

Sharks are getting a TON of value for that retention

Or do you think Karlsson already has that kind of value at 11.5 AAV x 4 years (starting at 33 y/o)???

Yes, he’s an RFA. This is a 23-24 ACGM though, so he’d only have team control for the year, with UFA in 24-25

Would have to ask the OP but I was assuming this was an offseason trade (most likely at the draft)

So the Devils would directly negotiate a contract with DeBrincat before the 2023-24 training camp
