Why does everyone think Montreal (or any team) will retain half on good players for 5 years?! It's a ridiculous ask! Hughes wouldn't retain on Petry and has said multiple times he is not retaining on long term contracts.

Not that I'm arguing the value of the swap but, who you paying to retain that much for that long on Anderson? MTL sure won't be...

add Hunter Skinner and a 3rd to Lafrenière and I might bite to retain 2.350 for 5 yrs.

He can get higher returns by retaining salary. It happens often. Mostly with shorter contracts bu with long term contracts too. The Leafs retained Phil Kessel for 7 years.

I wonder if we can fit such retention within the rebuild.

Not anytime soon. Unless we're getting multiple firsts and prospects. We can use our retention slots a lot better by not wasting it for 5 years. Retain as third party on 1yr deals for additional draft picks, retain on our own expiring deals for futures, etc. Absolutely no point in locking up 1/3 retention slots at this stage of the rebuild, we can consider longer term retention when we're ready to make a real push and need to move a contract to make room.

yeah but adding Lafenière is a real question mark here if the price is only retention, no?

If the price is that retention, this deal is off the table. KH is looking to get us out of the handcuffed blunders of management past, not lock us into a 5 yr retention that's unnecessary. Laf would be a great add but only if the price works for both sides. You're talking about almost $14 million in retention...

A struggling prospect is not a higher return though, when reports are the ask is a 1st + without retention.

Not my trade proposal but I wouldn't do this. But that is just me...
Laffy is a better point producer and plays with an edge + we have Kreider making Anderson more than redundant.
Also VAN not going to that. No way...

Good player? anderson is literally awful, idk what so many habs fans see in this guy. His hockey IQ simply isnt NHL level and his shot, which is sopposed to be one of his best asset is strong but not precise at all. Every single time he has a good opportunity he either shoot in the middle of the goalie of he misses the net.

Kent Hughes wouldn't retain on 3 years for Jeff Petry, He sure as hell isn't retaining $2,750,000 x 5 years on Josh Anderson.

Goodrow doesn't waive for Vancouver, And Allvin would want a 3C replacement for Horvat and a young RD which neither you provide.

Adding 5 players is a major pipedream, not going to happen. Rangers still wouldn't win the cup. And giving up that much for pure rentals is insane.

Of course MTL can retain, but you need to pay for it.

The market (Marleau, Monahan, etc.) is at a 1st round pick per $5M AAV retained. So for freakin 4x$2,75M+, you need to add 2 of them and you have a deal. And that going easy on you because NYR 1st will be end of round picks when the market go more toward mid-rounders...
