No scenraio is perfect.
This is ALL IN.
Mcdavid isnt going to put up with this lack of talent around him forever. Getting Mcdavid that much closer is well worth losing some meh prospects and a late 1st for Meier.
And the scenario you are describing is the current reality. Team has no depth and they saw how heartless this squad was without Hyman for a game in the lineup. Meier is the missing piece along with depth options such as Jensen and Edmundson that will give a legit shut down pair for the playoffs.
You have McDrai in their primes in a clearly very weak Western conference. If you dont think this isnt an ALL IN year, well, you probably enjoyed the endless rebuild years around Eberle, Hall and Yak.
I definitely think they need to make some improvements but I think their are better cost efficient ways to do it that benefit them now and for the future.
Mcdrai still have atleast 3 seasons to go together and if you throw all your beans in one basket and it fails not only do you potentially lose 1 of them but you lost that player for nothing and you leave yourself with minimal assets to work the future with.
If they were to be more cap smart about it knowing that cap will increase they could potentially extend their run longer and give mcdrai a reason to stick around.
I don’t know many teams that just become satisfied with one cup, every team wants to forge a dynasty everyone wants to be the last winner every season. I know that’s virtually impossible but I don’t think Tampa regrets the way the approached their 2 peat, and that was spending all their assets on depth players that best fit the style of their core players.
How many star players did Tampa acquire during their tenure of dominance?
Coleman, goodrow, savard, rutta, Paul, hagel all those guys have been career 3rd liners/ 4-6 dman.
What Edmonton should do is look for speedy guys who can benefit off the odd man rushes they can create with mcdavid.
Look for higher percentage shooters that can reak havoc off of draisaitls elite vision.
Look for a higher IQ dman that is fine with being more conservative while nurses plays his aggressive style of offence and defence.
I know it’s easier said then done but their is always diamonds in the rust to be found, I don’t think many expected tampas acquisitions to benefit tampas as much as they did. Their were times were goodrow and Coleman were the best players for Tampa during those runs
