So what happens when Meier asks for 8-10 mill in the offseason?

No team will match the compensatory picks that would be need for that contract.

Edmonton will be forced to move him for half of what they gave up.

If they were to resign him they would have to move half their squad, leaving them having to sign nhl minimum contracts to fill their bottom 6 and bottom pairing which Toronto has shown works very very well

No scenraio is perfect.
This is ALL IN.
Mcdavid isnt going to put up with this lack of talent around him forever. Getting Mcdavid that much closer is well worth losing some meh prospects and a late 1st for Meier.

And the scenario you are describing is the current reality. Team has no depth and they saw how heartless this squad was without Hyman for a game in the lineup. Meier is the missing piece along with depth options such as Jensen and Edmundson that will give a legit shut down pair for the playoffs.

You have McDrai in their primes in a clearly very weak Western conference. If you dont think this isnt an ALL IN year, well, you probably enjoyed the endless rebuild years around Eberle, Hall and Yak.

I definitely think they need to make some improvements but I think their are better cost efficient ways to do it that benefit them now and for the future.
Mcdrai still have atleast 3 seasons to go together and if you throw all your beans in one basket and it fails not only do you potentially lose 1 of them but you lost that player for nothing and you leave yourself with minimal assets to work the future with.
If they were to be more cap smart about it knowing that cap will increase they could potentially extend their run longer and give mcdrai a reason to stick around.

I don’t know many teams that just become satisfied with one cup, every team wants to forge a dynasty everyone wants to be the last winner every season. I know that’s virtually impossible but I don’t think Tampa regrets the way the approached their 2 peat, and that was spending all their assets on depth players that best fit the style of their core players.

How many star players did Tampa acquire during their tenure of dominance?
Coleman, goodrow, savard, rutta, Paul, hagel all those guys have been career 3rd liners/ 4-6 dman.

What Edmonton should do is look for speedy guys who can benefit off the odd man rushes they can create with mcdavid.
Look for higher percentage shooters that can reak havoc off of draisaitls elite vision.
Look for a higher IQ dman that is fine with being more conservative while nurses plays his aggressive style of offence and defence.

I know it’s easier said then done but their is always diamonds in the rust to be found, I don’t think many expected tampas acquisitions to benefit tampas as much as they did. Their were times were goodrow and Coleman were the best players for Tampa during those runs

The diamond in the rough thing isn't a thing. I heard ppl even compare Brock Boeser to Tage Thompson. The exception never makes the rule. Just because Tage broke out late doesnt mean Brock will breakout late. The chances are very high that Brock sits overpaid for years.
There is nothing to be learned from Tage Thompson. Now I'm sure a bunch of GMs will draft or sign a bunch of big guys that can do a spinaroonie, no doubt and let them sit/stew for years hoping theyll be another Tage.

Same thought goes with finding diamonds in the rough. That is the definition of rare.

Instead of trying a hail mary you are better off paying for certainty. Meier is certainty for two players that deserve the best in McDavid and Draisaitl

I agree in certain points of your statements and disagree in some areas, my POV of a diamond in the rough isn’t someone like tage who went from a 4th liner to an all star mine is guys who exceeded the value of price tag that it costed to acquire them.

For ex.

A guy like gurianov who has great straight line speed could benefit off of mcdavid due to the fact that probably no dpair in the league could keep up with them, or he could benefit from getting behind the defence before they could react to the long stretch passes drai is capable of doing

Or how about guys like TVR or Jensen like you mentioned on Washington. Solid defensive dmen that no don’t overplay their aggressiveness, they would be those reliable guys that are strong at breaking up and preventing odd man rushes

Another cheap player would be bemstrom, his fast paced style of play would have a high chance of working in edmontons faster then mosts style of play, he also has an underrated shot that could help provide depth goal scoring if they were to have a guy like Nuge with high tier passing and play making abilities on his line.

I can almost guarantee you none of those guys will cost a 1st, now if Edmonton chooses they could like to move their 1st but again with Edmontons cap restrictions I wouldn’t look to move it for a guy with a 5mill aav+ or a guy that is in for a contract extensions that will be around that range. Those contracts will most likely bite them in the butt next season

Totally agree about Gurianov, he needs a change of scenery and could do well in the right role.

Edmonton needs to save their 1st to use it to dump Campbell in the summer... 😁

Campbell. What a disaster!

Holland is too fixated on bandaids like Campbell. All he wanted was reliable performance from Campbell. Gambled and lost on a bet with low upside. They need to stop thinking about plugging holes but filling them definitively!
