Thing is, Matthew only had a handful destinations he was willing sign long term and Ottawa was surely not among these.

Ottawa will barely be able to afford DeBrincat, signing Tkachuk for more money makes no sense. Plus, DeBrincat is playing fantastic right now.

Matthew wanted to leave Canada and was only willing to go to a team in an income taxless state (Vegas, Dallas, Florida) or back home to St. Louis. He wouldn't sign in Ottawa

2022 1st round pick (#7 OA)
Ostapchuk, Zack : 1st round pick value to the Sens, is becoming the 2nd best prospect after Greig)
Bernard-Docker, Jacob : 1st round pick value to the Sens, is expected to play a crucial defensive role on RD in the future
2022 2nd round pick (#39 OA)
2023 2nd round pick (OTT)
2024 3rd round pick (OTT)

It's a heavy price but MT is one the few players I would have done it for (assuming he'd want to stay in Canada of course)

Tkachuk-Norris-Tkachuk would be one of the best lines in hockey, a pure force out there

thats where my head is at. Of course this is unrealistic as many comments have kindly pointed out, but regardless of the cost there's not a line in the league that matches up to a Tkachuk wing combo in terms of the combo of skill and physical play.

And I know he wanted to go to the States but you've gotta think going to OTT to play with his brother would've been the exception. Likely only signs 6 years though to go UFA with Brady which probably means he tries to up the AAV a bit but still

god, i feel like there's some juicy gossip there - you'd think Ottawa would be the *only* Canadian city he'd be fine with, for the obvious reason---but he's not!

was he not willing to go to OTT? I thought at the time they were saying it was the only Canadian team he had on his list

I honestly don't remember what his limitations were (it was August, the Mets were good this year, and Lou was refusing to make any move for the Islanders so I had checked out of NHL news for a bit) but if Ottawa wasn't on the list...hachi machi, there's some fun to be had speculatin right there

Matthew Tkachuk wanted to play in the U.S., not in Canada.

It's why he refused a long-term extension with Calgary.

And the Kings decline the second trade.
