If that sort of offer is enough it will be just barely enough... but then you have the issue of who else can beat it? At this time, there's several teams that would be able to top that quite easily. Honestly, I highly doubt Toronto is capable of landing O'Reilly. Lots of small prospects who also aren't terribly strong skaters. That is a speed-size mix not generally enjoyed by the Blues, especially in their Cs and Ds.

A first and a good prospect at minimum, which is more or less where all top end TDL assets start. I think the whole "they decide to move him" thing comes with crossing that threshold, otherwise I could see them re-signing him (even if I don't think that's the right decision). I kind of doubt it will have to be this year's first but obviously they'll be gunning for that. And the Blues have a lot of pseudo-top six forward prospects so if I were them I would be targeting someone like Niemela over someone like Robertson.

But if there's several teams interested, it goes up from there. It will be interesting to see how the Horvat thing shakes out and how the markets affect each other.

I can’t imagine it’s too much more than a 1st and 2 B prospects (I would consider a B prospect to be worth around a mid to late 2nd, so it’s basically a 1st and 2 2nds is what I’m saying). Most rentals don’t go for much more.

Horvat’s return will definitely impact ROR’s. I imagine Horvat gets a bigger return based off this years play (although I consider ROR the better player overall). And I agree, I think St Louis would definitely prefer a defenceman over a forward in terms of prospects. If Toronto moves a 1st in the deal I doubt they move Niemela on top of it, which sucks for Toronto if St Louis wants a d man on top of the first as their defensive prospect system isn’t very deep after him due to their top d prospects having graduated in the past couple years. The best Toronto has after Niemela is Villeneauve/Kokkonen/Kral, none of which I consider B level prospects

Most rentals aren't absolute playoff beasts who play 200 ft. games and finish high in the Selke voting every year.

It'll probably be a 1st + something. O'Reilly will be the 2nd most chased after center, following Horvat, and have strong competition from the 3rd, Toews. The strong pool at center will keep his cost down. Even behind O'Rielly and Toews in 4th is a good candidate in Monahan. There are a ton of centers available this year, definitely a buyers market for it.

ROR will get what every good to great rental gets -- a 1st (although maybe not in 23) plus an ok prospect plus whatever cap filler is needed. Blues should be happy with that, and ecstatic if they get a 23 1st.

Very true, but with considering his not so great play this year plus this year’s 1st rounder being more valuable than a regular 1st, he ain’t gonna get much more I hate to say it

He had a bad start, about 10-11 games. That slump ended over a month ago. He was NHL Player of the Week a few weeks ago. Sorry, but 10-11 games out of a career doesn't crash your value. Almost every player since the dawn of the league has experienced such a slump. And not all "B prospects" are created equal when it comes to team fit. Sending the Blues "B prospects" they don't need or want means nothing. Nearly all of Toronto's "B prospects" would not be very interesting to the Blues, mostly because they tend to be small while also being below average skaters, if not also at a position or role that the Blues don't need any more of. And it's not like Toronto is the only other team in the universe so they can just strongarm Doug Armstrong.

Plus, ya know, Leafs prospects are routinely overhyped by local writers and fans. There's also that.

You're not getting more than a top prospect + 1st round pick for a pending UFA bud. Like what are you thinking

And where do you imagine I suggested otherwise?
